I have a Case 1000 diesel crawler that is in need of an engine kit. It has a rod knocking and I am having problems finding info. or parts. It has a Contenintal 4 cylinder #JD 382 diesel motor that is naturally aspirated. I believe it was made in the mid 50's but is currently still a working tractor. If anyone has info. on where I can get a whole kit for the motor or bearings I would appreciate the help.

D. Parker, Parts are basically nonexistant , but there are some ways around that problem. I have several 1000 crawlers , some loaders and some dozers. I also am in the engine rebuild biz , makes hunting parts somewhat easier . As for parts , here goes a list that may confuse
you a bit . For mains use large MM rod bearings, one in each end narrow two for the center main and make oil holes and tang slots as needed . for rods use large case rod brgs , narrow .100 and hone big end of rod .025 to fit case brg. bore and sleeve the liners , use a cat piston pin and pin bushing . for worn ring grooves ,put GI's in the grooves . For cam brgs use 2 cummins v12 in front bore, use 2 F series ( narrowed ) for center ,use 2 G series for rear bore . I did find a fellow on the west coast that
makes rear seals that bolt in . Fel Pro is the only supplier and their set has no rear seal and no manifold gaskets ( kind of a joke to call it a full set ). I have liner o-rings . There are no more proper brgs in the after
market , I got all there were about 10 years ago , PC was the last to have them and those were in a return warehouse in texas .

Make sure you go thru the balancer , if the bushings are bad in the oil pump end , it will ruin the oil pump. Then that requires a 6.2 chevy oil pump and a lot of machine work , but boy does it make oil pressure .

When you pull the valve train don't loose the little buttons on the end of the rockers , and if they are worn bad I can rebuild them .

Casepower is right 403 is a direct bolt in, but when you mount the flywheel housing , you must dial indicate and redowel just like doing a cummins or mack truck. also indicate and shim the front pump mount ( not on D series). Must use case water pump and adapter and crank pulley.

Send me an email .

george

They are just about imposible to find. You can try to find them by asking for bearings for a Massey Harris 55 diesel, you may have better luck. I also believe the JD 403 engines that the military used had the same journal diameter. They came in "Davey Permivane" air compressors and a few other pieces of equipment that the military used. You may try a large military surplus. If your machine is still in service, I would try to find a 403 engine, it will bolt right in. Where are you located? I know where a couple are in NC.

In response to Casepower's reply. I live in SW Iowa and would be very interested in the 403 swap. Do you know exactly where to locate one? Are the 403 parts easier to obtain? any idea how much $ for a complete 403 motor? Any phone numbers to call on one would be great. Have you went through the process of switching them out? Thanks for any info and the response.
