I finally found out what was wrong with my Case differential. The bull pinion gear had a broken tooth. I was able to order one from Worthington Ag in St. Johns MI.
I have two questions now. Can I replace the top and side covers using blue silicone to form the gaskets? Secondly, I am wondering how to repair the rubber hose that attaches to a fitting underneath the top cover. There is a metal line running aft to fore underneath the cover. This line has a soft rubber hose attached which goes into the transmission housing. What is it for? And can it be spliced with a nylon nipple? I tore the hose lifting the cover. That's what happens when a manual isn't available.

The purpose of the metal tray and hose is to return hydraulic oil (if the 3 point piston leaks) to the torque tube. There is NO pressure on that hydraulic hose. Just make sure there are no kinks in it. The oil in the torque tube is TCH (Torque Converter Hydraulic) oil. The lube for the rear end is 90W gear lube.
The side gear housing/brake plate has no gasket. There is only a rubber O-ring. If it's in good condition, it can be reused. However, it would be wise to replace the side gear shaft seal. There are shims between the side gear/brake housing and the rear end housing. Since you'll be changing the side gear, make sure you remove any side play in the ring gear in relationship to the pinion shaft. Also, the back lash between the pinion and ring gear should be .008 of an inch. Again, that's accomplished by adding/removing shims. Good luck.

Hi Roger,
Thanks for the information on the hose, seal, and shims. How is the (.008") backlash measured? I'm assuming a feeler guage is used, but where?

I forgot to ask what kind of fluid goes in the differential. It is separate from the transmission.
