I have a Case 400 Diesel with a stuck engine and a good engine from an 830 Case. Condsider replacing the 251 in the 400 with the 301 from the 830. I know there will be a few small changes that need to be made such as plumbing the fuel and the accelerator/fuel linkage, etc. Are there any big obstacles I should plan to encounter? I've done a Gasser swap before. It looks like the diesel should bolt right up and be just about as easy. Also, what's the best plan to dispose of the old 400 diesel engine. As far as I know the 400 has been parked for about 20 years and has been stuck for who knows how long. It's a pretty low houred tractor with very little indication of wear. Any tips are appreciated.

When it comes to swapping engines in a Case remember, chain drive to chain drive, gear drive to gear drive

Were there any chain drive 400s?

I had to go look it up. The book indicates that the 400 replaced the D's and from the beginning used a gear drive.... at least from what I just read.

If so my hopes of transplanting a Case diesel onto a D is probably not realistic unless I can find one of the factory experimental units (lotsa luck, I'm sure). I certainly don't have the time and effort to do like Camboted did (though I certainly admired the job!)

You can put the 830 engine in as far as the block is concerned no problem. You will need to look the throttle linkage over and see if everything fits. Is the 830 a case-o-matic? If the 400 is a good orginal tractor you may want to fix the engine and keep it original. Also what is wrong with the 830?

Another question to add to this is: would the 400 engine fit something older, like a D? I have absolutely no clue what the differences might be so I'm just wondering.

Thanks

Sorry, but the D series is unique. You'd have to develop a very sophisticated adaptor plate. No bolt in.

Sounds like a job just fit for you Ted. Hey, would you be interested another 930 LP Rowcrop? I'm supposed to go look at one tomorrow. The guy says it's a good runner but has a repair on the block right behind the carb. Let me know if you're interested. Email is open. He also told me he had changed it over to a dry-type air cleaner from a 1030. I guess there's no harm there.

Thanks Lamont but they just put a 100% tax on LP gas.

Holy cow!!!!! That"s the way it happens though. Instead of encouraging a lower cost of other fuels, they just tax the cheap fuel so there"s no advantage to using it. I guess our government is not the only government that takes bumbling ideas and actually makes them policy. I hope this doesn"t hurt you and your work too badly. Talk later.
