I bought a 930 Case with a pinion gear out. How big of a job is it to put one in. How many hours does it involve? Thanks

I did mine last year - I'm really glad I did it, because a lot of things were in bad shape. I'm not sure I would do another one, though. I did it alone and it was a hell of a job. Replaced the ring and pinion (got after-market set from Worthington Tractor)and every bearing and seal. Best of luck - it can be done but budget a lot of time and patience. I recall the ring & pinion, bearings seals and parts were about $2200 (I also did the PTO unit at the same time).

Never worked on a 930, but Im pretty sure it is very similar to my 580B CK Backhoe. I replaced the ring and pinion gears on it last summer. It has no cab, but it had the backhoe mounting frame to deal with. I think the castings were all the same in those days, so its probably the same to work on your 930 as my 580. The dealers told me scrap her, cause they wanted $10 000 CDN to fix. I have no idea on the hours, but i was working evenings for about a month. Many places are deliberately difficult to open to keep you from fixing it. 12-point bolts, hidden fasteners.... service manual may have proved helpful. It is a big job though. to get the pinion shaft out requires breaking near everything down in hte trans. Good luck with the 930.

It is a major job. The six speeds are easier You've got to pull her apart, both axels come out, top cover, etc, etc. It is a much heavier unit than the 580, but I suspect you are looking at 25+ hours, with an equipped shop and skilled mechanic. It would be good for someone with a service manual to give a more accurate estimate. Parts are expensive but can be obtained used, but are not cheap due to the diffuiculty of removal. I'm not trying to talk you out of fixing it. We have brought several to Cambodia and repaired them here. With $2.00-5.00 per day labor it can be done for much less, and it gives jos to our orphan kids that have finished technical school. If you decide to scrap it, let me know, I might be able to at least give you your money back?? email me: [email protected]
