Case 1070 questions

First I"ll say I"ve never been around Case, just Oliver and IH. Needless to say, I know squat about Case tractors. I"ve been reading here on YTmag and elsewhere on the net that Case 70 series are cheap, reliable horsepower. I"m thinking of someday maybe getting either a 1070 or 1270, when I need the power. A few questions; beside the paint job, what makes the black knight version differant? How reliable are these tractors? How well do the powershifts work, do the regular 8 speeds have a torque amplifier deal like the IH or Oliver power booster, or is it a straight 8? How durable are their engines? How comfortable and quiet are the cabs? Thanks for your time guys/gals.

I read somewhere that the Black Knights were a Sales tool for the dealerships... They were Demos that were "Set-Up" properly (i.e. weight distribution) I don't think the dealerships were suppose to play with the HP but who knows for sure. We had a 1070 with the 8 spd., bullet proof tractor, but it would always grind the gears when shifted (like all Case tractors of that age). We also had a 1570 with the power-shift. It didn't have the pressure lube update kit so when disking on a long side hill terrace it had no lube on the up-hill side planetary. So anyway the right side planetary shelled out one spring, the whole thing locked up and jack-knifed the tractor and disk. We had to tear it apart right in the middle of the field. Got some salvage parts out of IL, slapped it back together and traded it off on a used 4586 IH. Anybody out there buy a 1570 from the case dealer in Decorah, IA in the early 80s???

We have a 970 powershift on our farm. I believe the 1070 and 970 share the same rear end. We've had the rear end apart about 3 times. Those CASE 70 series engines are aweful darn good engines. Lots of torque. I'm not really fond of the powershift although they offer more forward speeds than the 8 speed. Make sure you have the powershift set up properly and keep it well maintained or it could give you problems. The 8 speed will take more abuse in my opinion. I've heard that the Black Knights were all 8 speeds, would like to know if that was true or not. The 1270 is a bigger all around tractor.

We have a 1270 and everyone who operates is falls in love with it. Powerful, manuverable...a very nice all around tractor. It gets a lot of use on our farm. Glenn F.

We currently have 3 1070's, 2 1270's, one 1370, and a 2390. They are just rumors about the powershift trannys being weak. Only had two go out in all the tractors we had. Both were 1070's that were worked over hard. They are pricy to fix if you take to a mechanic but what isn't? Looking at close to $4k for a complete rebuild. I split the last 1070 and did it myself for just over $500 but we had a lot of parts laying around. Keep the either away and change the hyd filters as recommended. The early 1070 we have is a bit louder than the later models but it could just be that tractor. The 1270's have a larger cab and door and a lot more pulling power. They all have torque like no other tractor of their time. Personally I would go for a 90 series, they are really quiet and just overall more refined.

Very good tractors, Case was the first with the quiet cabs. The powershift has four clutch packs that lock up to provide three speeds forward and a reverse. this is in front of a four speed transmission to get you twelve speeds. The engines are very good. If it rolls over, it will start. Very good on fuel. The black tractors were the same as the others, they were painted that way to make a big splash. International had some painted up different too. I think they were 1206's but that was a long time ago. I think you can't go wrong with a 1070 or any of them.
