Remove front valve cover- turn engine until timing marks on crankshaft on front of engine are lined up atdc.-check valve push rods -both should be loose-if they are loose you are attop of compression stroke an can than set pump at proper timing. If push rods are tight you need to turn engine i complete turn . Than remove large cap on topan in front of inj pump an you should see two lines -i on pump an i on gear - turn crankshaft to 29degres btdc an they should both match -if not you will need to turn pump. Was pump removed since engine run? Doyou get white smoke when cranking engine? If fuel system was worked on are you sure all air has been removed?

Yes,the pump was removed. It does have white smoke.I would guess that means it is getting fuel

Should have said it is only nessary to remove an check valves if you are sure pump has been removed . If pump has not been removed you only have to make sure timing marks on front of crankshaft an timing marks inside cap are atproper setting . 29 degrees btdc

You may still have to turn engine i full turn even if pump has not been removed to be at spot you check timing.
