The rear main bearing cap is slotted on sides for a cotton rope type seal (A30483). The rope is about 20 inches long (1 for each side). Is there accepted method to install? I folded the rope in 3rds, twisted, and then tamping down with a punch. Or, should all the rope be used?

I did what you did by folding it in thirds. I soaked mine in slip-tac(#3) which made it a gooey mess, but it went in okay and seals nice and tight. I buy my slip-tac from CASE, it comes in a plastic can with a brush in the lid. The nice thing with slip-tac is it resists high temperatures and never hardens.

I have a 51 Ferguson with rope packing in my main cap also. After I re-built it, it leaked. I've read that the rope packing should be soaked in motor oil before installing.

The concern for installing the rope is that you are sure not to have any voids in the rope channel when the installation is complete. The manual says to use a flat punch to install it.

I have not done a VAC but I have done that style of seal . What I do is use a 16d nail cut off sq. like a flat punch would be and I use butcher string and a little RTV sealer mixed in . Might not be a quick but it does seal.
