I am wanting to build a 400 gas engine. I would like to pull from 5000-7500. I have a set of propane heads. How big of bore should I go or can I go? What kind of stroke can I get? Any other tricks to get a lot out of a 400. I think 336 cu inches is relatively easy, but do I need more? Are the propane heads worth messing with?

I had mine bored to accept the sleeves from a 336, which is an 870 diesel sleeve. Sleeves from a 504 are the same. This put it at 4 5/9 inch bore for 336 cubes. I used pistons from an M670 LP Minnie Mo. The fit was relatively easy. I'm running heads from an 830 LP. They flow much more than the 251 LP head. I would like to add 1/2 inch to the stroke someday.

What are the casting numbers on the 830 lp heads. The heads that I have are A8500. I believe these are for the 400-500-600-700-800-900. What are you running for a carb? What kind of cam work? What had to be done to the pistons to fit? Thanks

It's almost finished. Just a few minor additions to go.

Dang that looks good. How does she pull? It looks like you have new front grille screens or are they just good original ones? Did you make the hood? I cant for the life of me figure out what it is off of. Are those 18.4X34s or 38s on the back? What kind of hubs did you use. I can't find the right size hubs.
Do you have a picture from the back? What all did you strip out? Thanks

Send me your email. I'll send you some more pic's. The tires are 18.4 x 38. It is an original hood from an 800 Case. Grill screens are the original one. A friend of mine straightened them BY HAND. I think his fingers are made of steel. I've only had it to 6 pulls so I haven't figured it out yet. It pulls pretty good though. I just need to get used to it. I've pulled 4th gear up though 7500 lbs. and never lost power. Usually spins out on about 1700 rpm. Ain't bad for an old homemade rig. Email me.

Can't remember the head numbers right now. Would know if I saw them. You are right about the A8500. That's what was on mine which is a 700. Cam work was done by Sonny at Bullet Racing Cams. I used the Moline wrist-pins with the pistons. The Case pins are MUCH larger. I had to have bushings made to adapt the pins to end of the rods. I think the carb I'm running came off of a John Deere 105 Combine. Not sure on that. It's almost too much carb but I'll need it if I ever stroke my engine. My tractor is not radical at all. It has a regular fan and radiator on it and you could work it in the field if you could afford the gas for it. It burns fuel like a John Deere now. It has plenty of power but I guess it's never enough.

The factory stroke for your 400 is 5 inches, to get a 336 out of your motor you will need to get your block bored out to accept a sleeve with a 4 5/8" bore Which would be 870 diesel sleeves and any 504 sleeves. The pistons might be hard to find i don't know who has those off hand. You can use the propane heads and just rebuild them and run em. They will flow plenty of air to keep with a stock cam, a little gasket matching on the intake ports will really make these heads flow. Hope this helps.
