Just thought of this as I was reading forum, and yes I know the improvement of alternator vs generator. To maintain historical accuacy to some extent while using an easily available economical battery; ie, Sears/Sams/Walmart/etc., can 6 volt starters and generators be rebuilt/rewound to operate on 12 volts rather than original 6v. This would make conversion a lot simpler or am I being too simple?

I am not sure I understand your question...6 v batteries are readily available and are not more expensive than 12 v. If you have to replace the genny anyway and want to go with alternator any good generator shop can fix you up with a 6 v alternator. If you really want 12 volts get a 12 v alternator change your coil( or get a resistor). The starter will tolerate 12 v for years as long as you don't crank it excessively

Starters don't need to be rebuilt for 12 volts, I had a lot of tractors with the 6 volt starter on them but set up for 12 volts and have never had problems with the starters. As far as gennys they can be set up/rebuilt to put out 12 volts, but I'd take it to some one that does that for a liveing to do so.
