Hi to all,
Please help with several problems I have on my 310 wheel tractor.

My neighbor asked me to move a propane tank for him, on the way over to this house, I put the transmission in 4th gear (low), and opened the throttle, by then the bad gas in the tank made its way to the carb and the engine died. I pulled the fuel bowl and dropped it on the road and cracked it. I had my neighbor tow me to his house. I got a new fuel bowl, and cleaned out the carb, here is the weard thing: the tractor would not idle, and was getting very hot (and quickley). I thought the roll pin in the governor had sheared because the governor was not operating properly. I have the front case off the engine and the governor shaft and weights operate smoothly. I have not checked to see if the roll pin was sheared off (yet).

Does anyone have any ideas what I should look at or check before I put the front cover back on the engine, or any ideas why the engine was overheating?

Thanks,

Brian

while you got it apart. take the thermostat to the house ..get your wifes favorite soup making pot. put the thermostat with some cool water and put it on the heat..see if it opens. could be a coincendetal break down.. did you check your governor springs to?

Thank you for your reply, I forgot to say that there was no thermostate in it when I tore it down, and the water pump is working.

What governor springs are you talking about? is there one inside the engine behind the governor shaft?

Thanks
Brian

If you had the carburetor off or apart during cleaning, it may be sucking air past one of the gaskets. This would cause it not to idle. You can check this by spraying starting fluid around the gasket while running to see it the is a change in idle speed. Also make sure the throttle linkage moves freely on the little ball on the carburator, if it is too tight it might jam up.

Not sure if either of these would make it heat up fast.

Thanks for the ideas, when I get it back together, I will check the carb and use starter fluid.

The throttle linkage did move freely, it just seemed to not change the way the engine would run. it wanted to run at full speed?

Thanks
Brian

Brian; Check your air cleaner. If it is below freezing and water has accomulated in the bottom and frozen, preventing air from flowing to the carburetor. Easiest way to check is to take off the intake hose at the carburetor and see if it runs alright. If the temperature has been above freezing there, disregard this advice... Gene

Gene,
Here in Western WA, it does not get below freezing to often, and when it does, i'm not out in the barn (barn has no heat) trying to fix things.

Thanks for the help.
Brian
