Has anyone replaced the bushings on the steering arm shaft. How much of a job is it? The outer bushing is noticeably worn and partial reason for a lot of play in the steering. I would like to replace these, but don't want to tie up the tractor for too long as I use it to plow snow (Minnesota). Also what is their cost, availability--Case dealer, on line?

It's not too bad of a job, but you'll need to remove the gear housing from the torque tube to get it done. I bought a piece of bushing stock at the local welding shop to fix mine. Cost was less than $1, had enough to make both bushings with some left over. I'm thinking that it took some heat and a two-jaw puller to get the arm off the shaft.

Apparently it is just a straight bushing without a flange. Of what material is it made--bronze?

Mr. Kernel, is the bushing you are replacing the outside brass bushing in the VT167 or 179 housing. I attempted to purchase one from CNH was told by the dealer nla. I located a replacement from a bushing manufacturer. I believe the original case number is VT2220 and also used in the pedistal housing. If the bushing is bad most likely the shaft is worn as well. What I have done is build up shaft and then have it taken down to be true diameter. It requires complete removal of the steering gear housing. Will require replacement of the outer seal when reassembled (national seal 6149). If you need it for plowing unless you line up parts quickly don't start unless we don't get any snow. Here in Michigan we only have to wait one day for the weather to change....Dan

Also, forgot to mention. I made a half-hearted effort to remove the steering arm in the same manner I removed one from the SC. (Driving a wedge [chisel] between the arm and the housing [some marring, but it let loose]) but it would not budge. Any suggestions for removal when I seriously address the problem?

It is the outer bushing that is visible and I'm assuming that the inner bushing will need replacing at the same time. Do you know the name of the bushing mfr.? It is not critical that I repair it now, but would like to get the parts and the procedures for doing the job so when I tackle the repair I can do it without laying up the tractor too long. Thanks for the parts #'s and the info.

Mr. Kernel, I believe I still have a couple of the bushings out in the shed. Morgan Bronze is the company that I purchased these from. They have a minimum order and are industrial supplier only. If you try to buy one it won't work. As I stated in my earlier post you will need to completely remove the steering box from the torque tube to service. As for removal of the arm from the shaft...use caution...the spline and arm are stuck and making repairs or getting these to go back together without sloppy fit is critical. (heat the arm and it should come off the shaft) The bushing that you see on the outside is actually the seal. The bushing is pressfit in the housing.(quite thin) Removing the old one if original will require either collapsing the bushing or using a small puller. I have repaired 2 or 3 of these and it is an all day job after removal of the gear box. Of course when I take the gear box out I'm already restoring the rest of the tractor(cleaning, painting etc.)Removal of the gear box requires removal of the steering column housing, fuel tank, dashboard/battery box etc. So you can see it is a job. e-mail me and I will look for a bushing. I would get a parts and service manual if you don't have one let me know....Best Regards Dan
