530 ck hydraulic problem

Seem to have excessive pressure on the hydraulic filter but only when drawing in the backhoe crowd arm. The tractor came to me with an aftermarket filter which blew within a month - sheared the aluminum filter housing apart. Inspection of the element showed it was beyond dirty and had collapsed under the pressure. This in turn blocked the outflow and caused the housing to fail. I tried to replace the filter assembly with an unhoused, screw-on, cartridge type. It holds up through all hydraulic activities except drawing in the crowd arm under load. Then the cartridge explodes. Is there supposed to be high pressure only during that one movement or is there a problem in my crowd control valve. I have bypassed the filter temporarily and everything seems to work fine.

Generally, hydraulic oil on L/B tractors is only filtered on its way BACK to the side frame reservoirs. If there is an obstruction (part of a filter?) in that return line between the filter and the side frames reservoirs, the filter will be pressurized and could blow apart. Check out the return line between the filter and the side frames.

Hydraulic circuits on the backhoe are protected with secondary reliefs. Those reliefs are located on the backhoe control valve. Without them, hoses and seals would pop like popcorn. If the crowd seal is bad or its secondary relief is faulty, it will leak down. If it doesn't leak down, the seal and the crowd secondary relief are likely good. If there is only high pressure on the filter when the crowd cylinder is being used, it's possible that the secondary relief on tne boom cylinder circuit is openning when you use the crowd cylinder which will send a larger volume of additional oil back through the filter in that situation. The place to look for your problem is still between (including the filter) the filter and the side frame return lines.

Thanks for the reply. That was one of many (some unprintable) thoughts I had. If that were the case I would expect the filter to blow under any operation but it"s only when the crowd arm draws under load.

Seal in crowd cylinder may be letting pressure by.
I would put a pressure guage in the return line.

Thanks. Is the another seal or check valve in crowd control valve or is the cylinder seal all I should have to check?
