159 Gas Engine.

Looking at the manual, there should be a nut (1/2 inch square drive from a ratchet) that comes off before I can remove the drive pulley. It's the one you can manually crank the crankshaft with.

I swear it looks to me like it's one piece with the pulley and doesn't come off. I know that the breaker bar is on the verge of breaking when I try to remove it, so I back off. Is there another version of this pulley that doesn't have a nut, and if so, how do I get it off? A wheel puller's fixed center is too big to fit into the 1/2" drive square hole.

If it were a nut, I would expect a sharp break where the nut meets the pulley as opposed to the radius that looks machined in.

Go to the following link to see the pulley I'm talking about in case I've only managed to confuse everyone. It's a clearer and bigger picture than shown here.

Yep - 3/4 Impact took it off like it was butter. Amazing.

Thanks everyone!

Jerry,

Its tough to get that nut off of there. You'll probably have to do what I did to get mine off. Heat the nut up with a torch until it just starts to glow then let it cool down completely. Completely meaning its totally cold to the touch. Then take your breaker bar with about a 4 foot cheater pipe on it and gradually apply pressure to it. If the square drive opening is screwed up then you'll have to use a pipe wrench which is what I actually had to use to remove it. Just apply steady pressure (CCW when looking at the front of the engine) and eventually it will break free. I was worried for awhile about mine but it eventually broke loose. Oh yeah, it was not a sudden give either it was a gradual give that took effort to turn. The reason being the nut is about 2" in diameter and is a tight or snug fit inside the crank pulley.

Hope this helps.

Brad

Thanks everyone. I'll give it a shot. I was almost convinced it was part fo the pulley, but I guess it's just a tough nut to crack.

If I get it off, the photo will be posted eventually on my online page that I'm using to show my engine rebuild progress.

Thanks again.

If your pulley is like the one we just removed from a 148 in a Case 310b here is what we did. After nothing else worked I put an adapter from half inch to three quarters on an impact and the little retainer spun right off. Ours was right handed.

I am looking at the 530ck parts catalog right now. For the 159 gas engine, it shows a threaded screw on "disk" that holds the keyed crank pulley on. It looks like something simular to what angle grinders use to hold on the griding wheel. There isn't enough detail shown to see what type of wrench fits it.

Good Luck!
