I picked up a 1930 model L, but the engine is stuck. What is the best oil to put in the cylinders before trying to free the engine? How long should I soak the cylinders before trying to free the engine? What is the best way to free the engine? Will pulling the tractor in gear damage anything? Thanks, Glen

I would pull the head before doing anything the gaskets are cheap and available at Olson's Gaskets in Wa. I have two LA's and one it stuck after removing the head it easy to see why lots of corrosion all over the place. You then can clean the cylinders above the pistons and then soak them then apply pressure to move them. Remove the side panels to check the condition in the crankcase it should be clean and dry if rusty then you will to do a complete tear down. There are no short cuts to mechanical work. You iether do it right the first time or pay for it the second time. Walt

Remove the plugs and fill the cylinders as best you can with diesel fuel or a diesel fuel/gas mixture and let it sit for the winter. A remedy used by my late Grandfather for many years and many tractor restorations....

Definately, do not try pulling the engine free by pulling it in gear. The valves are notorious for sticking, and if you don't have those loose, you'll bend a pushrod. (Speaking from experience!)

I'd fill the cylinders with Kroil, or Marvel Mystery Oil, and just let it set. About once a week, go lean on the handcrank. Depending on how long it's been stuck will depend on how long it will take for the penetrant to break it free.

I would put the hand crank on the up stroke and throw a bottle jack under it. Just get the weight off the front end and onto the bottle jack so that there is a little pressure to help turn it. Marvel mystery oil worked well for me. A little PB Blaster might help. That stuff is awesome. There are 1239 different recipes for engine unsticking stuff, I wish you luck, but be patient! Might take weeks.

I've tried that trick with the bottle jack before. It will do the job too. It'll provide constant pressure, and every now and then you can give the jack another pump.

Might want to consider going shopping for a replacement set of pistons and sleeves. (at least locate a set.) You don't know what you're gonna find after you get the pistons out.

Based on past experience, I would pull the tappet cover, loosen the rocker arms, and check for stuck valves before trying too hard to roll the rest over. May save you some bent push rods.

The 2 best things to use is first try tranny fluid, let it sit a few days, then use a long bar on a pipe wrench on the hand crank. If that doesn't work then top the tranny fluid off with turpentine, not paint thinner but the good old true turpentine. I've used that on 10 or so engine and it has never not worked yet.

Don"t pull the tractor in gear to free the engine you may cause damage to other none engine parts.
In addition to pistons being seized it could be the rod or main bearings (if it was a oil problem) Piston seized lockup most of the time comes from overheating. Look for cooling problems frist (bad raid, hoses, water pump ect).

I would use WD40 in the cyls for about 24 hrs then use a fully charged battery and bump the starter, watch the fan to see if it moves with each bump.

The WD40 is a good idea, but this tractor does not have a starter. Its hand crank only. I'm new to Case tractors so I'm guessing the late L's had starters. Someone told me that Kroll or trans. fluid is better than WD 40????? ???

Whatever you use it going to take some very good muscles to turn the engine. (1) Check for possible overheating problems.

Check the bearings-remove oil pan.

I check first for stuck valves if they are ok i mix wd40 and automatic transmission fluid 1/2 and 1/2 and let that set in the cylinders for 3 or 4 weeks the jack up 1 rear wheel put the tractor in gear and rock the wheel back and forth.
