pulling tires for a DC

Does anyone have recommendations on why type of tires to buy for a late 40's DC that is destined for tractor pulls? I don't know if the ribs on the tires should be V-shaped or almost a flat bar. I am targeting a 5500 lb class.

Would it be a good idea to remove front wheel weights?

Thanks for the help.

My favorite tires for pulling on my DC's is 15.5 Firestone Field and Road with top and front cut. You can run alot of weight up front on a good clay track. On the farm stock DC I run 13.6 COOP agri power 23 degree. There a little narrow on a loose track but aren't to bad on a bitting track. They work great when you run them backwards while pulling on blacktop. DCPULLER

The rules vary some depending on the particular clubs. If you can pull on 15.5X38 tires, that is a good size. The tire has the same height as the 13.6X38 tire and mounts well on the stock rim. Older tires will work better for pulling. as they age, the rubber gets stiffer and resists tread rollunder on hard pulls. New rubber is softer and will roll under. A tire with about half tread will usually work best on hard tracks. If rules allow cut tires, thay can be sharpened to give a good biting edge. If cut tires are not allowed, I would look for a set that has a lot of road wear. They tend to wear off the rear part of the tread bar and gives more pressure on the front, biting edge of the bar.

The ultimate tire if the rules allow and you have the power to turn them would be 18.4X34 mounted on disc wheels and clamp-on hubs. Find out what the rules will allow and then follow your wallet from there. Firestone Deep tread tires have been a favorite for many years. The same rules above apply to them also... Gene

Thanks for the advise.

I need new tires for the tractor. I may know of a guy with an older set of 13.6x38 tires from a Farmall H. I don't know the tread angle, but they are the harder rubber and partially road worn. It sounds like they might work well and not drain the wallet too bad.

Yup, I bought the DC that was left in the mud behind the barn because the rear wheel fell off. I didn't get the serial #, but I am guessing '49-'51, because it has an oil filter and not live hydraulics.

$300, original Case magneto, original lights, good exhaust manifold, hydraulic pump, straight sheet metal, and the engine is free. It needs a rear rim (I think I have one) and 4 tires.

I wouldn't worry to much about competition from me this year, seeing as it doesn't run and I have never pulled before... maybe next year...
