I am trying to find out what is the engine rotation direction when sitting on the seat facing forward? The tractor I am working on is a 580 CK backhoe with the 188D engine. I bought it with the engine supposedly locked up. Today I dropped the oil pan and was able to turn the engine with a screwdriver in the flywheel. Just wanted to check for the correct direction. Thanks for the help. Case

Thanks for the help! I was turning it in the wrong direction. Next chance I get I will turn it the other direction and see if I find any hang-ups. Another question, what is the torque specs on the rod and main caps of the 188D engine. Thanks, Case

If facing the crank pulley (grill), it's CW (Clock Wise)
If facing the flywheel (driver's seat) it's CCW (Counter Clock Wise)

Now, George and Walter have each posted opposite rotations! Is there a different model engine or what?

I'm in agreement with George. When looking at the front of the motor (in front of the tractor) it rotates in a CW direction. I asked this same question of George many months ago when I was rebuilding mine and it was CW then and its CW now!

There are very few left hand rotation engines , some
in marine applications and some in rear engine buses . almost all other engines are right hand rotation ( clockwise viewed from the front as in the fan end ).

THE DIRECTION IS CLOCK WISE IF YOU WERE ON SEAT.

Direction is clockwise if looking at the front of tractor. ( standing in front and looking at tractor.)
