Re: Case 730 Diesel power cell in reply to Al47, 11-07-2005 16:43:06
The diesel power cell is a hollow cavity that is located across the combustion chamber in a parallel line from fuel injector. When fuel is injected, part of the injected fuel goes into the power cell. As the power stroke continues downward, the fuel that was injected into the power cell flows out for additional and complete combustion. While power cells are efficient, most modern diesels do not use power cells. They are called direct injection, because the injected fuel is aimed directly at the piston. Direct injection diesels are capable of far greater RPM's, hence, far greater horsepower.
Removing a power cell: Remove the power cell cap, remove the corresponding injector, insert a rounded end mild steel rod through the injector opening, and tap out. Don't do what a mechanic once did. He removed the cap and decided to let the engine blow the power cell out of the head. It didn't come out until the engine had run for nearly 10 minutes. When it came out, it put a hole through the side of the workshop. Obviously, he never found that power cell. If anyone had been in line of that blown out power cell, he would be "pushing up daisies". Hope this helps.
