Took my shift lever out for cleaning and painting and put it back. Now it won't move up and down--just from one side to the other (I think from 4th to neutral to 3rd gear as the shift lever is in the higher position). What did I do wrong? I have had the tractor apart (idle for a year or so, so haven't driven it--cleaning and painting), but know that I should be able to shift into all gears when standing idle. Will be starting the tractor up on Friday or Saturday--so any help before then would be appreciated.

Remove the shift lever and look inside where the bottom of the shift lever goes. There are three shifting rails with a groove in the center to accept the shift lever. They must all be lined up in the center from top to bottom. If not, the only gears you can shift are the grooves the lever can fit into when the lever is replaced. All the rails must be in the center before you can choose which side you want to select from. Use a large screw driver to move the out of line rail or rails to the center. I hope this helps!
