My batteries run down because the starter solenod
draws current even when the starter is not engaged. The starter works fine.What should I look for when I take it apart?
Thanks for your replies.

 Re: 930 Diesel Starter (It's NOT the solenoid!) in reply to CNESLER, 10-29-2005 18:43:22
While the HOT wire goes to a solenoid post, the solenoid itself can only be activated (draw current) when the starter button is pushed. When the starter button is pushed, current goes to the small terminal on the solenoid, creates a magnetic field which engages the starter gear into the flywheel ring gear, then connects the HOT terminal on the solenoid to the starter motor itself. That's the long way of saying either the solenoid works, or it doesn't. As others have said, leave the HOT wire on the solenoid but remove the other wires from that HOT terminal. Make sure the key is OFF. Then (one by one) take the wires that are removed and touch them to the HOT terminal. If there is leakage, one of them is going to spark. Trace the wire that sparks and where it goes. (Wire insulation?)(Bad switch?)(Faulty generator cutout?) (Bad diodes in alternator?) Good luck.

The Gen.& Regulator are fed off the Solenoid Post. I would suspect them before I would the Solenoid.

Isolate wires coming off of solenoid by removing i at atime .Manifold heater orwire going some other place is drawing current;
