I've got one of those outdoor wood burning water heaters made by Pacific Western. It came with the house which I just picked up a year ago. I'd say burned about 10 face-cords (1x4x8) of hardwood last winter - but it wasn't a harsh winter. My shed holds about 24 cords (all facecords). I paid $600 canadian ($500 US) for a tandem load which gave me about 23 cords once I cut it. I'll tell you, that wood burning heater stokes that house (1500 sq ft) and there's 5 of us in the family. It also heats the hot water real hot so I save there too. When spring came and I stopped burning, you noticed a big difference in the hot water temperature. So I guess for about $250 US, I heated my house last winter and a good portion of the hot water.

Compare that to oil which cost me $90 for three weeks keeping the house real cool and only using it in the morning and when I got home to take the bite out. And that was before the real cold hit, and before oil prices went through the roof. That's when I figured I'd give that water heater a try. Once I started that flame in early December, it doesn't go out until I shut it down in April. I'm glad my unit came with the house though because they're not cheap. The firebox is about 40" deep and the door opening is 20x20 so I don;t split anything. If I fill it with good hardwood when I get home, it's good for 24 hours. It has a fan forced thermostat that comes on if the temp of the water drops - so it will burn even green wood (though not as well). It will burn anything.
