Well after reading the posts I decided to check out the gas engine I have and see what could be done with it. I put some air presure in each of the cylinders. When I did this to #4 it made the radiator gurgle pretty bad. So I figured that was a good place to start. After pulling the head off it appears that the engine must have been run hot because the head gasket looks like it is seperated somewhat. What the heck, I'm this far pull so I pulled the other head off and #2 piston has a spot on the top, directly in front of the sparkplug hole, that has a 1 1/2" melted piece missing. Well now I figure I may as well drop the oil pan and pull all the pistons out and check them out. This is when I learned that the small cast plate, which also holds the rear of the oil pan up,holds a lot of oil in the clutch area. Two bags of oil dry later ( and one _____ off wife) I pulled the pistons. The sleeves and pistons except the melted one look brand new. There is absolutley no ridge in the cylinders. All of the compression rings were stuck and I broke them while trying to remove them from one of the pistons. Here is what I think I'll do, please correct me if you think I'm wrong. I will buy one new piston and new rings for the whole bunch. I'll take both heads in and have them magna-fluxed to assure no cracks. Then I will buy a repair manual (so the wife doesn't get _____ off again) and put her all back together. Do two Hail Marys, turn the key and fire her up. Thanks for any replies.

If you're right about running hot...and the evidence of the head gasket...makes me worry that things might be warped a little bit. This is a concern with the sleeves. I agree you might be better off getting some new sleeves too. Good luck.

You would really feel better if you put a full sleve kit in . However if you do as you said clean an check very carefully. Iwould put full set in -

If the old pistons fit good, buy a new one that looks the same. Take one of the old ones or all of them to an automotive machine shop and have the set balanced, especially if the new one is a different brand and does not look like the others. I did this with a Farmall H and it runs real smooth even though the pistons are a different brand. Good Luck!!
