I went out to start my DC and noticed the battery cable negative end had turned black and was starting to collect some corrosion around it. This tractor is wired with a positive ground so this is actually the positive battery post (This cable end was brand new about 2 months ago.) I tried to start it and the tractor turned over several times but would not fire. Tried a couple more times and could not get it to fire and the battery acted like it was dying. Unhooked the battery and put it on the charger where it immediately went to 100% charged. I admit that I am not the most mechanically inclined person on the planet. Do I have a short somewhere? What would cause the cable end to turn black? Thanks for the help.

A thorough battery post cleaning is in order. And make sure where the ground cable connects is clean and tight.

Auto Parts stores sell magic washers to put over the posts and under the terminals to reduce corrosion.

DCTom is right on, if the posts are dirty or not tight, they heat up dramatically during cranking and will quickly loose connection.

I would check and make sure the battery cables are tight, might be it just wasn't getting a real good connection, and was getting a little hot. jstpa
