If you can put a pressure gauge in the banjo fitting that you bleed the system with(just above the filter housing). You should get 3 to 7 pounds of pressure when the engine does start. If you do not get that replace the filters and check for restrictions in the fuel supply lines. If you still do not get the correct pressure your lift pump is bad however I do not think that is your problem since on a 580E the fuel can gravity feed good enough to keep the engine running. Remove the fuel return lines (including the fittings) and make sure they are not stopped up or kinked. Be carefull you may loose fuel out of the tank. If the return is blocked up the machine will start and shut right off because the return pressure builds ip so much that the fuel supply pressure cannot open the nozzles. The machine does have a shut off solenoid however it usually just stops working all together. It is located on the bottom of the pump and has a hot wire going to it when the key is in the on position. Check the current. If you do not have current let me know and we will go down that road. If you do have current remove the shutoff solenoid and remove the ink pen type spring and plunger from the bore. Reinstall the solenoid without the spring and plunger and see if it starts. You will have to shut the engine down with the lever on the top of the pump that is not hooked to anything. If it starts replace the solenoid.
good luck

Most late model 580's were diesels. Regardless, Texas Denny is right on the money. Check the simple things first. Even though there may be fuel in the tank, that doesn't mean the engine is getting enough fuel to run. Filters? Obstruction in the fuel line or tank?

Don't know if this is it but the symptom is exectly like low fuel flow caused by an obstruction somewhere between the carburetor and the fuel tank. The carburetor is filling but too slowly to keep up with the quantity of fuel that the tractor needs to run. It runs off the reservoir in the carb bowl. When the bowl is empty, it shuts down.

The quickest way to check fuel flow is to pull off the drain on the carburetor and drain fuel into a can. If it runs out fast and and stays fast for two cups or more, it may be something else. But I'd expect it to come out pretty steady untill the carb bowl is empty and then go to dripping. You need to go though the gas tank and tank opening, the settling bowl, the gas line, the input to the carb and the needle and seat.
