Worked on the lights on my 800 the other day, had all but one working and then the other night I needed the light and they didn't work. Is it common for the lights to only work with the engine running or has some one else messed with the wireing on this tractor??

Old, Often on non working lights on an older tractor its cuz they arent getting a good ground. Use a test light to see if their hot feed has voltage and if so, its likely a bad ground assuming the lamps are okay. Rust or paint under the mounting clamps or washers or fixtures is usually the cause of no ground. If the hot feed is the problem instead of the ground, then check for open wires to the lights or the light switch for failure or else it has no voltage getting to it.

Well guess my question was really why do they only work with the engine running. Switch on and they didn't work, engine dies and they didn't work only when the engine was running. I did rewire it so its now wired so if the switch is on the lights can be turned on instead of it haveing to be running for them to work. Sort of think some one wired them to work off the genny instead of the battery.

Hi again Old, Yeppers if they were mis-fed from the Generators or Voltage Regulators or Cutout Relays "Armature" terminal instead of say the ammeters Load terminal or the BAT terminal on a relay or VR (same point electrically) then there would be no voltage till the Gen was putting out. Ya may have answered your own question???

John just to let you in on something I know wireing but this one had me thinking a little more then I like to any more. When I was in the navy I was an E.T. and fixed computers but they where a lot bigger back then. I've also worked fixing TV and radios and did wireing in a factory for years so the wireing is childs play but when an odd one comes up I like to make sure I'm thinking right and not just plan lost. Thanks

hey i can relate to that. it took me probably 3or day's putting mine back together. finaly got it right by trial and error and if ya feel that it's freaking useless, leave it alone and do it tommarow.( if you can) mine was the wire coming off the voltage + battery post. i hooked it to the ign. and they would come on in the on pos. or running. i took it and hooked it to the battery term on the ign. switch. hope this helps. gary oh mines a desil, that might be different.
