I received a LOT of good advice from folks on this site and have ordered some manuals and tools to get ready.

1- Can I get a number of suggestions of where I could order parts online (or mail order) as I need them from some of you.

2- Somebody mentioned NAPA - will they have parts I'll need for cylinders and rings and if so, what info do I need for them? Dimensions? Tractor model?

3- Sources for any parts would be appreciated (pistons, rings, sleeves, kits, SEALS, anything else?)

4- "IF" I have to pull the motor, should I do the clutch? It hasn't been a problem, but I'm there right. Is it difficult? Is it easy to source parts? Anything else I should do that is not to overwhelming if I go this far?

5- I've heard of pulling the moto referred to as "splitting the frame". I'm I really splitting something here? Does the back end stand separate from the front end, or what?

6- How many hours do you figure I'm looking at(conservatively)? I'm mechanically sharp and handy and have good tools but have never done motor work like this before. I'm mainly asking because I need to gauge how long my beast will be out of commission once I start, and winter's coming so my tractor will stuck outside my garage shop door until I finish: (A) if I have to only rebuild in-frame from top and bottom access (B) if I have to split for rebuild due to crankshaft machining work being required

I can answer #2, #4, #5 and #6.

I bought ALL of my internal engine parts and a lot of other parts from NAPA. Rings, bearings, gasket kits, thermostat, voltage regulator, valves, guides and block freeze plugs.

If you do pull the motor I would definitely replace the throw out bearing and verify the bushings in the T/O bearing pivot arm are in good shape. After I had my engine removed I was shocked to see just how bad things were in there.

The previous rebuilder neglected to install a pilot bushing in the crankshaft which ruined the end of the transmission extension shaft. Had to have that reworked and ended up replacing the bearings that support it. If you pull the motor you will need to raise your bucket up in the air, support it very very well and then support the back half of the tractor under the torque tube. Just picture everything from the engine forward being removed with the exception of the bucket.

Well for a reference I've been at it for many months BUT thats because I had a LOT of other projects going on and we were looking for some used parts as well. I had to replace the crank which took some time to locate a good used one. Also needed a radiator and some other odds and ends. I'd say if you're diligant at it and spend several nights a week you're looking at several months miniumum.

Hopefully you won't have to pull the engine. In the long run I benefited from pulling the engine because I found the bad clutch parts and a LOT of things that were done wrong inside the engine by the previous rebuilder. I now have 70 lbs of oil pressure and it starts on first turn of key. This is a diesel 188 but most points I've made will hold true for the 159 as well.

Good luck!

Brad
