We have two Case tractors with the same problem. The tractors are both gas with four gears and triple range a 530 and a 630. The problem is both make a noise in reverse and first and second gear. The noise is a knock or a chattering I am guessing a bearing but not sure which bearing. As I said I am guessing and since both tractors are doing the same thing I was wondering if anyone else has had the same problem and could help point me in the right direction.

Hermie, I have a 530CK that developed a nasty chatter in "LOW" range. I havn't fixed it but noted that my dual range gets Oil from the C.O.M Clutch "Pressure Regulator" (oIL TO TRANSFER tube).

Hope this helps,

Hey Herm: Do they make the noise in all the Ranges? Another possibility is the Oil Slinger. It is disengaged in 4th, but could be tearing up in the other gears. I eliminated it in my 350 because it went bad. I just run the oil level higher.

Hello John. Yes they do make the noise in all three ranges with the exception of third and fourth gear. They will have to sit till I have time to pull them apart.

Re: 530 630 noise test... in reply to Hermie, 10-15-2005 14:45:59
TEST FIRST!!! Hook a disk or other implement that puts a moderate pulling resistance on the hitch. Run the engine at 1750 RPM or more. Try 1,2,3 in the regular transmission and the various S, D, H, in the triple range gears for the noises. Yes, there is an oil slinger in the regular transmission to lubercate the input shaft bearings because those bearings are ABOVE the regular transmission oil level. In neutral, those bearings would NOT get oil without a slinger. The noises you are describing are NOT coming from the regular transmission. You CANNOT use a 730, 830, 930 or any other Case tractor as comparison to 430, 530, or 630 transmission noises! There are even differences (wear) amoung 430, 530, & 630 tractors in regards to the amount of triple range transmission noises. Anyone taking a basic high school physics course knowns that things with greater mass (730, 830, 930 transmission gears) are less likely to move or vibrate than something lower in mass (430, 530, 630 triple range gears). A moderate pulling load on 430, 530, 630 engines smooths out the power inpulses, thereby reducing the vibrations on the triple range input shaft. More than likely, all of noises you described will disappear under load but will reappear under little or no load. With these transmissions, it's NORMAL. If you don't try this test, you're going to tear everything apart and find NOTHING wrong. Then, you will want to invite a friend or neighbor over to kick your butt all over the garage!

Hey Roger: The 730 & 830 don't exhibit "Torsional Vibration" because of the Balancer in their engines. 430's & 530's don't have the Balancer. The 930 is a smooth runnin ol'e 6 not plagued with Torsional Vibration anyways. No big deal to pull the Tranny Cover & check for a loose shaft or a bad slinger. Like I said, I took the slinger out & run the Oil Level over Full. Been that way for 10 years.

Re: vibrations in reply to John Saeli, 10-16-2005 08:46:27
Greetings John,

There is really nothing wrong with anything you've said. However, I've worked on a number of 730,830 engines that did NOT have internal balancers. Vibrations are more pronounced on these engines when speeds approach 2000 RPM. There is an inherent out-of-balance in all inline 4 cylinder engines. The amount of mass at the center line of the crankshaft between the bottom of stroke and top of the stroke is not equal. That creates vibrations. At certain "critical speeds" vibratons occur and that causes other parts near them to vibrate also (chatter in a triple range). Those vibrations can be reduced by dampers, lowering the mass of the reciprocating parts, or internal balancers which turn twice the speed of the crankshaft. The six cylinder engines are not plagued as badly with vibrations because not all of the piston/rods are at the bottom or top of a stroke at the same time. An oil slinger in the transmission is really not needed if the clutch is disengaged, or the tractor is basically only used while in some forward or reverse gear. When the input shaft turns the lower output shaft (in gear), oil is naturally slung up from the lower output shaft to lubricate the upper input shaft bearings. Without a slinger, you would need to make sure that one of the input shaft gears was touching transmission oil. As you said, you increased the oil level until it did. Nice talking to you.

Here is some more information. My dad bought the 630 in 1962 with 47 hours on it and the 530 has been around maybe half that amount of time. The trans noise started on the 630 first than a couple of months later the 530 started with the same noise. My dad has 16 tractors 8 of which are Case so trust me these are not normal noises.

 Re: 430, 530 630 dual/triple range noise. in reply to Hermie, 10-14-2005 18:05:13
Unless the noise is a grinding noise, the chattering noise at certain speeds are NORMAL. Not to worry! Both transmissions use straight cut gears and their tolerances are not tight. Vibrations from the engine cause the gears that are NOT engaged to chatter. As engine RPM's increase, the engine vibrations are reduced, and the chattering noise will decrease or go away. Always make sure the torque tube oil is at the proper level. That will also reduce the chattering noise because there will be a better oil cushion between the gears.

I"d like to add another 530 gear noise to the discussion. Gas engine, 540H, Dry clutch, Dual range, shuttle, highway 4th gear option.
The Higher the overall gear selection used. The louder the singing gets. Pretty loud from the drivers seat. I was assuming its either the bull gears or ring & pinion?
I adjusted side gear preload, ring gear bearing preload & backlash. The pinion has lost its bearing preload but I didn"t split and correct this... I"m sure I should?

Dennis in my 530 the high speed singing or whining was caused by bad side gears. They were very expensive from the dealer, I was able to find a parts tractor with agood rear end and transmission cheaper than one gear would have been. GOOD LUCK Tony
