One more thing...

Prior to this oil issue, it would run great for a while and then maybe 30 minutes later you would hear the knocking pretty good if you gave her gas. That might provide more info for you to consider.

I saw a posting where one guy mentioned Macdonald Machinery in South Bend, IN - I called them and order the Service Manual ($95) and also the parts manual ($19). So I figure I'll be ready regardless of what I need to do. But I still have all the questions in my previous posting.

Hi,

I just finished a rebuild on my 530CK 188 diesel. Mine had a knocking sound and I had hoped or just a hole in one of the pistons. Turned out to be a rod bearing which trashed the rod and the crank. I ended up having to break the tractor to pull the engine. In your case with luck you can rebuild the engine in frame. Pull the head and pan. This allows you access to pull the cylinder liners if need be. If your crank journals are scored you'll need to pull the engine as well to get the crank out for turning.

Once you've got the head and pan pulled you'll know more about what you're facing. Liner and piston kits run about $500 or so, gasket kits will be somewhere around $150. Bearings will be about $125. I also had the valves reground (had to replace 5 of them) with all new guides for $285. I had all the machine work done and bought the parts from the local napa dealer.

Now that mines running again I get a steady 70 lbs oil pressure and it runs like a top.

Good luck!

Brad

Thanks Brad. And thanks for the link. Looks like you've got a nice shop to play with these things. I eventually also have to do all the Backhoe cylinder seals so I may be contacting you for advice then as well. We also bought a hobby farm (40 acres - almost all wooded) and I know what you mean about the maintenance effort. The 530CK is the perfect workhorse so I'm anxious to get it up to snuff - I just bought it about three months ago.

Thanks Hector but my engine is a 159. But if the manual indicates some parts and I'm stuck I'll let you know.

If you do split the tractor. Consider the seal between the torque tube & 4-speed/final drive. The torque tube has a much higher oil level than the final drive. Easier now than later?
