OK, I am not at all familiar with old Case tractors. I just found out that some tractor manufacturers actually use MORE than 2 cylinders in their machines! Crazy ideas...
Anyway, a local guy (1 mile from my place)has a propane LA that I can pick up for $50. The rear tires are shot and the front end and engine are disassembled down to the short block. The short block has been sitting on its side on wood blocks outdoors, so there is some rust glaze in the cylinders. It has huge, fat rear wheel weights on the rear. As far as I can tell, it is a complete tractor. Could someone please give me an honest opinion or advice on whether I should buy it and sell the parts, buy it and fix up, or let it rot where it sits?
Thanks!!

I'm not too far from Vinita -- maybe a bit over 1 hour. I'm in Cherokee, KS. Cherokee is about 11 miles N of Columbus, KS.

Those old LA's are work horses. My brother and I paid $175.00 for a rough 44 model that had powered a saw mill for years. I really lucked out about 5 years ago when I got a 49 on propane given to me. It was almost over on its side out in a wood lot sunk into the ground. Just for grins I shot some air into the tires and they held air and the old girl stood right up out of the dirt(took a lot of trips with an air tank for those rears) pulling her up onto a trailer with two 4ton comealongs was another story in itself. Have fun.

LA Case is a fantastic old tractor. I would dearly love to find one around me that cheap. As JD's go an LA in general is not an expensive tractor but they sure do turn a lot of heads at shows - especially around me where a big horse in the 40's was a DC Case.

By all means get the old tractor and who knows maybe JD's will be a dilemma for you in the future and not Case.

Thanks for the replies, guys. Well, I bought it tonight. I hauled home most of the loose parts and pieces but I"ll have to pick up the tractor this weekend when I have more time. As I went through the goodies, I soon came to realize that this thing is probably more of a project than I had anticipated. The block is in good condition, but it is stuck and the crank will need at least .010 ground to be useable. The lp head looked good, but it did have a patch in the center of the manifold side, probably from freezing. I don"t think that is much of an issue, though, considering that these things don"t have a pressurized cooling system. It did come with 2 lp carbs, 2 exhaust and intake manifolds, 2 flywheels, and some other doubles. I love the looks of an LA Case, but sadly, I think I"m better off parting this one out and looking for another tractor -- one that is in one piece to begin with. This one will take WAY too much time and $$ to get going for me. So if anyone need some LA stuff, let me know.

What would you want for one of your intake /exhaust manifolds. My kerosene manifold is about to self destruct. I would be interested in other parts as well. I live near Springfield Missouri so you're only about 90 minutes away.
Thanks

Do you have a belt pulley?

Yes, it has a belt pulley. It spins, too. That's about all I know about it, though.

Consider selling it all?

Sure. I'd sell the whole thing. If this thing had been in one piece to begin with, I'd be fixing it up. I think that this thing would be in better hands if a Case guy owned it, though. By the way, do you know anyone who is interested in a JD 40 crawler dozer?
I'm in SE Kansas, near the MO and OK state lines.

Ya mean run an ad? I guess that I can do that when I get the tractor home and I can take a digital pic of it.
