anyone know what may cause this to happen?

after about 4 starts with the button and the battery is lower than completely charged, the button fails to make the starter.... turn, it will make a clicking sound.

So i have to get out and short the starter with a screw driver and the machine will start right up (been doing this for 5 years)

what would be your guess as the cause of the problem, and the solution?

just found this site and thought I would ask.

All of a sudden I am having the exact same problem (580c),...push starter button and hear a click, had the starter tested and the shop said it was weak, so I bought a new starter/solenoid. Put the new starter/solenoid on,...same thing. When you said "jump it with a screwdriver", what are you touching to make it go. The current location of the hoe is up in the woods, I need to atleast jump it to move it down to the shop.

Please help!

If you have the Power Shuttle Trans there is a neutral sw.on it. It is on the side opposite the big clutch cutout solinoid, the drivers rite side. Its about a 7/8 inch hex and has 2 terminals. the little connecter plug slides off sideways, It's kinda hard to work on it , but clean the area and it is easier. The Mechanical Shuttle uses the same switch, and is much easier to get to.....

This is only a guess as Im unfamiliar with that backhoe. However, it sounds like when you jump the starter she cranks fine which tells me the battery and the starter are both okay. Therefore, I think the starter solenoid may be the problem. It could either have its contacts all burned n carboned or maybe theres an internal short in it. THIS ASSUMES ITS AN ELECTRIC SOLENOID OF COURSE.

The other thing I would try is to jump hot voltage (hot wire) to the starter solenoids lil S activation terminal and see if it does better then. IFFFFF FFFFF it does fine if you jump a hot wire to the solenoids lil S activation terminal BUT NOT WHEN YOU PRESS A START SWITCH,,,,, ,,,THEN THE SOLENOID ITSLEF IS OKAY so either the start switch is bad or its wiring down to the solenoids S activation terminal is bad. Be sure the wires not shorted from the switch to the solenoid.
