I need help identifing a Case Tractor that my neighbor has. It is a wheel tractor about the size of a Ford 8N, with a four cylinder gasoline engine.

It doesn't have any hood or markings but looks like maybe 30 years old. This tractor broke a rod through the block at the dipstick. I'll need a replacement block as soon as I know what I need.

Where do you look for a useful serial number?

Thanks
Chappy

It sounds like an old V or VA series. If its a V its a continental engine if its a VA its case's own engine. Either way you may have a tough time finding a replacement block because almost every tractor wrecker has sold off a lot of those engines. I recommend that if there isn't any internal damage to the block use some J.B. Weld and repair the opening if possible.

By you saying it looks like a Ford 8N, I am guessing the driver's leg's fall down on each side of the transmission with the foot rests down at the sides. If so, you have a VAC-14.

The model number is on the instrument panel (dash) or if you have a tool box it is located there also. The serial number will identify the model (V, VC, VAC, LA etc.). If it has a seven digit serial number, the first two digits are the year the tractor was made (you calculate the year by taking the first two digits and minus 4 from it, for example if first two digits are 45, the year made is 45 - 4 = 41, or 1941). If the serial number is less than seven digits, there is another calculation. You need to find out what model and the number of digits the serial number has to identify this tractor.

If it has a wide front it might be a VAC14.Look on the dash the vintage tag should be there. If not someone else that sees this posting might know where it is and be good enough to tell you.
