Took apart one of the brakes on the 800 over the weekend. What a mess. It looked like someone had packed the brake unit with grease like you would a wheel bearing. It looked like there was a bit of water in there as well. Is the grease/oil most likely from the seals around the shaft or the plug/cap in the end of the shaft? Also is there a trick to getting it back together without doing it 5 times??? and do the return springs help hold things together to reassemble? (they were all broken) Is the 730 the same setup? Thanks.

I think these are the same as on my 401. I rebuilt both sides of mine last winter. I think the biggest problem is that Case didn't allow any way for accumulated brake lining dust to get out of the housing other than a tiny drill hole in the bottom of the housing which is very easily clogged up. One side of mine had gotten moisture in from rain which combined with all the powder to form a rusty morass that stuck everything together. I had to replace the balls and springs and several of the ball seats as well. The discs were pretty badly grooved but for a 3 mph tractor worked fine after a little lathe clean-up.

The good news is that all parts are avaiable from Case, and I've since seen the brake discs on eBay at below dealer price. The other hardware will probably need to come from the dealer. I had no trouble re-assembling with the springs holding everything together.

As far as the leak, my guess is the seal but that's just a guess. My weren't leaking enough to justify replacment.
