830, From your post Im unsure if you had or have been converted from a 2 wire cutout relay (Gens Field wires to light switch) or a full fledged 3 wire Voltage Regulator (light switch not connected to Gens Field post)??? Often, a 2 wire cutout relay system got updated to a full fledged 3 terminal Voltage Regulator.

VOLTAGE REGULATOR WIRING

If you have a 3 wire VR with BAT ARM (or GEN) and FLD terminals, they wire:

FLD on VR to Gens Field post ARM (or GEN) on VR to Gens Armature post BAT on VR wires to the ammeters Load (NOT to battery/starter) terminal

CUTOUT RELAY WIRING

BAT on relay wires to the ammeters load side terminal. GEN (or ARM) on relay wires to gens Arm post The Gens Field post wires up to the dual purpose light switch and charge selector switch

If you convert from a 2 wire relay to a 3 wire VR, theres no longer any wire from the Gens Field post up to the light switch, it now goes to the FLD terminal on the VR. They made some bi polar generic cutout relays that worked for Pos or Neg ground systems simply by lead reversal.

If you happen to have a 3 brush generator (used on some cutout relay systems) and are converting to a 3 wire VR, I would set the adjustable third brush to the max charge location.
