Hello,

It's amazing to me how abused a tractor can be! Both rear axles on my Case 400 are twisted from about 12:00 to 1:00 as viewed along the keyway for the wheel. I suppose someone tied a chain to the wheel and dumped the clutch to get out of a ditch or swamp...who knows. They don't runout up and down much though, the tractor goes down the road in high gear fine. The axle seals leak though so I'm replacing them with donor axles.

I pulled the top cover off and low and behold there are teeth broken off one of the bull gears. Do bull gears have to be replaced with the matching differental gear from the donor tractor or not? Will they wear in together over time or gaul up? My differental gear looks fine.

Also, my manual says the bull gear has to be replaced from the rear of the tractor after the pto hydraulic assembly is removed. Is it possible to remove the bull gear from the top if I drop the differental by removing the bearing carriers? I'm replacing those seals along with the axle seals anyways.

Lastly, what is the difference from the 400 rear end and the 930/1030 rear end. They nearly doubled the HP on this rear end from 1955 to 1969 (400 to 1030) hows that for durability! Someone still wrecked mine though, god only knows how.

Thanks,

Mark

Hello,

I was told the axle may twist back to 12:00 come daylight savings time. Could this be true?

I do not know if that is abuse or not.

I used to pull outlaw modified trucks and we used to draw a chalk line on a used axle when we installed it and when the chalk line made a complete revolution we would replace it otherwise it would soon bust.

Another weird thing is that even though left and right axles were the same we did not dare put a used left axle in the right side or it would "unwind" like a rope and explode leaving the rear end housing full of slivers of steel.

I suspect that a tractor that has pulled its' fair share has some degree of twist in the axles.

Jerry

Bull gear should lift out of rearend. After removing nut & lock plate from axle, press axle out of bull gear using A 1\2" drive socket and bolt with nut.

You didn't say which 400 you where referring to, the 400 series or the 400b(410b & 411b) series. They are two totally different tractors with the same number.
