VAC Project: Need a part

While working tonight, the fan belt jumped off. Closer inspection shows the generator pulley has been wobbling itself to death! The pulley is shot, and the armature shank is worn a bit, but a new pulley MIGHT make it work. That said, anyone out there have a servicable pulley or an extra decent generator for sale?

It's a 1950 VAC, 6 volt with cut out. The parts book only shows a complete generator, no separate pulley number. :( If anyone can help me with the correct part number I might be able to make some other inquiries as well.

You can reply direct to me at frank@fboerger.com

Thanks as always.

The pully might be sleeved,ie, bored out and a new piece put inside and then bored and rekeyed. I have done this on several old odd size pullys with great results. If the shaft is too worn it could be turned down to clean up the wear and then fit the pully diameter to the undersized shaft.

That sounds like a plan, but in this case if I can find a decent used generator, I think I'll that route. It's easier for me to get another generator working than to spend much money on lathe time.

Right now I'm having trouble finding a "C" pulley in 3 1/2" x 5/8". If I can, it's worth a try with another pulley.

The pulley is wallowed out to about 1 1/8" I don't know it kept running.....

Looks like I have a lead on another unit, so it might work out.

She was charging at 20 amps right to the end.

Well, doubtful you can salvage that pulley. Pending damage to the shaft you might be able to make a cheap repair this way.

If I remember right the gen shaft is something close to 11/16" and the thread o.d. is slightly less. Run the gen as a motor, clean up shaft with emery and take a tiny bit off the top of the threads. A good quality 5/8" washer will be near interference fit or you can ream it out some.

Buy a narrow belt pulley with near the same belt angle and saw in half. Use the flat washers to get to your belt width and file out the keyway.

Joe, if I went looking for a new pulley, what belt size would I tell them I need? It has that SP383 pulley and the very wide belt.

Frank, I don't know what a SP383 pulley is. Your gen pulley only needs to match the width and taper of your engine pulleys. If the O.D. of the gen pulley changes outside the span of the tensioning bracket, obviously the length of the belt will have to change.

I converted my ‘53 VAC to alternator 8 years ago. The pulley I got was then sized for ¾” nominal belt width (measured across the top) and 40° taper. I used the original gen belt which was Gates 551 (now Gates TR24449 and crosses back to Case VT4886). The belt is still on there and fits the pulleys very well.

I don’t know how they measure the width these days or the taper either but I think 40° nominal is pretty much automotive standard.

Go to this link, lookup the belts for VAC in application. Different generator p/n’s listed will affect the length but not the width or taper.

Case parts manual E61lists 3 generators and 2 belts.

Gen VT3467 (autolite GAS-4169A) V-belt VT2102.
Gen VT4885 (autolite GBM4823A-5) and the later replacement that includes the regulator VT3350 (autolite GHD6001-SS) apparently use the same V-belt VT4886.

Go to the interchange at the link and lookup your present V-belt p/n and see if it matches the gates p/n for your application, if so use that belt to size a new pulley.

Joe

Frank

I had a similiar problem and a different pulley did not quite fix it so I made a pulley that fit the slightly undersized worn armature shaft. Once the pulley was painted you could not tell that it was not original.

I might have to do that if I cannot find a suitable replacement.

Thnaks!
