What is the best type of gasket / sealants to stop a stuborn water leak in the return elbow from the rad to the block in an old L?

Also is it possible that there is too much pressure being created by the pump? It seems like at lot of force, even before the tractor has had a change to warm up.

Are we talking the upper elbow from the head to the radiator or one of the lower elbows?

If it is the head to radiator elbow, it could be caused by an angular misalignment due to the pad missing or deteriorated under the bottom of the radiator where it sits on the front bolster.

I have seen that happen before. When all those assemblies were designed and machined, the thickness of that pad was included. Everything being cast iron and not having any flex may not be letting the flange(s) sit flat enough to seal.

It is the top elbow and the pad is missing. Any suggestions on how to make a new pad (if one can't be found)

Thanks,

Great info BTW

We use rubber bailor belting and it works well and looks good if you cut it out straight.

Good Luck,

I actually first learned that one from a 22-36 McDeering but all the unstyled machines are built similarly. It seems to affect the larger machines more than the smaller ones. My CC had no pads but it still lined up close enough to seal without a problem.

When I made mine for my L, I cut up the side wall from an old bicycle tire. Then just stacked them until the top elbow lined up correctly. Drilled the bolt hole out, and you"re in business.

There are two things that are more important to
sealing than gaskets and sealers. `First is are the surfaces flat ( not just smooth ,machine shop
flat ) ,check with good flat file . Second is surface preparation, is the surface cleaned of
all the old gasket and the garbage that comes in
a can or tube and is called gasket sealer. If you have met these two conditions almost any
gasket will seal the joint . The only other problem would be a crack in the
casting , maybe near a bolt hole .
