Does anybody know if there are rebuild kits for our Magnetos? I have 5 DC's and trying to keep all the magnetos working right is becoming a pain. I have bought "good" magnetos in the past and they work for about a year to 3 years. At the current price for them thats to much for me to spend.

If there is no rebuild kit, how much are the dist. drives I see on some tractors. I may think about changing over to a dist.

I recently replaced my mag with a distributor from a A/C WC. It was a bolt in swap. The only thing that I did was attach a 12V coil, I switch from 6V to 12V on my DC. Timing is accomplished the same way as for a mag.

For parts try magnetoparts, com. ([email protected])

I have ordered parts from this site and am pleased.

My magneto in VAC case has been running for over 15 years without work on it. I perfer a mag over the distributor...had distributor on the VAC took it off. Good luck!

No rebuild kits if they are the Case mags. Parts were discontinued in the 70s and getting harder to find. The tooling and molds to make the parts are gone. Distributors here are getting harder to find too. New Wico XH mags are available and so are kits for them.

Are these Wico mags good quality and reliable? I have considered buying one to save on wear and tear on my Case mag. I could then save the Case mag for if I ever do a full restoration on my SC and "retire" it.

Yes, The Wico XH mags are good. That XH & XHD model has been around since the mid 40s. It was discontinued for a while but they been making them again and parts for them for over 10 years again now. They were simple and made to fit a broad range of applications easily and that's why they are making them again. Even most parts are available again for the Wico C. What makes some of them unreliable is using cheap made tune up kits or not replacing the bearings after 50-60 years.

Is there anyway to retrofit parts into an old Case magneto?

Slick Electro aircraft mags that is now Unison/GE took over the Case magnetos years ago and discontinued everything in the 70s and early 80s for the tractor mags. After that the remaining parts around were it. A impulse assembly from some of the Slick mags is available new,($180) but like buying airplane parts and it almost cost as much as another mag or several. Points from the later aircraft mags used a different cam setup and won't work without modifications. You can find NOS or used parts for them sometimes. Coils can be rewound or replaced with another mag coil like the FM J or X coils. Same thing with condensers or use a electronic capacitor. Points are getting hard to find so don't throw old ones away so maybe they can have contacts replaced later if not too worn out. I have never found any other points to fit properly without major modifications. The Case 41 and 4JMA mags used 3 different styles of points and 2 different cams so its hard to find a easy retrofit for them all. Then the 4CMA points were some different too. New gaskets are available for them now. Problem with getting other parts made is the manufacturing minimums and new molds, dies and tooling would have to be made. I tried to track the stuff down years ago but was told it was all scrapped. If not someone is just sitting on it or it's lost.

Thanks for all the replys guys. I used 3 magnetos to make one work. Then my best magneto just went out on my restored tractor. So I'm back trouble shooting again. I think I can find a coil and capacitor that might work, its the other parts that will be hard to replace.
