I just rebuilt my 188 diesel and now it seems that unburned diesel is ending up in the crankcase. Any help would be appreciated.

You probably are leaking out the front of the injection pump or thru the diaphram of the transfer pump if it is cam operated. If it is missing hard maybe it is coming from the combustion chamber but I doubt it.

Jerry, It seems to be running fine. I am also dripping what seems to be oil out of the exhaust. Do you think I should have the injector pump looked at? Thanks,
Dan

The oil dripping out of the stack is a situation called "cold stacking". It is condensed diesel fuel that can occur in real cold weather.

If it is not real cold out then I would guess that either an injector is bad or the pump is bad. Testing the injectors is much cheaper than overhauling an injection pump.

If the motor has power cells then maybe they are plugged.

I usually try to eliminate one posibility at a time starting with the cheapest.

Jerry,
What are power cells? I put all new injectors in during the rebuild. Would you agree with me that I need to have the pump checked and overhauled if necessary.

Dan

I am not familiar with a 188 Case diesel but most older diesels use some kind of a swirl chamber. This chamber usually has an access port directly across from the injector. If your head has a large hex nut on the opposite side from the injectors, the power cell will be inside. It will be a 2 piece unit.

I hate to spend your money without actually witnessing your problem but if it is not the power cells then an injector pump overhaul is probably the answer.

Jerry,
I definately don't have power cells. Do you have any idea on the cost of an injector pump overhaul? I can buy a new pump for $595.00. Thanks for all of your help. I really appreciate it. Maybe some day I can return the favor.
