Any ideas why my 870 tranny won't go into 3rd or 4th gears? reverse & 1st & 2nd engage fine but 3 & 4 shifter won't budge. Opened inspection plate on tranny top and could see other gears/forks engaging R, 1 & 2 but 3 & 4 locked tighter than Dick's hatband....tracor runs/moves fine otherwise just can't go fast when moving from place to place. Any ideas greatly appreciated...

Did this happen suddenly or did you inherit the problem? Is it powershift or 8 speed?

I inherited the (problem) tractor when my dad passed away last year and of course I was unaware of the problem until I tried to take it down the road to shred a friend's pasture. It's an 8 speed - the good thing is, I also inherited the shop manual for it, so I have a small idea what to do, just not where to start. And this tractor will be down for a month at least by the time I rig a hoist to remove the platform to get to the tranny top to see if I can solve it there. Not a good time but thought I'd see if there were any sage advise before I start blindly unbolting things..... ..and things start sproinging off the tractor into space.

Pardon me, but is my Case too "young" for this board?
