G'day fellow enthusiasts, We have a Size C tractor that is still a goer and used on our small farm on the north coast of New South Wales, Australia. The old girl (we call her Casey) has been in our family since new, for 4 generations! However we are confused as to what year she is (my great grandfather who bought her died about 20 years ago). We note there are a number of different theories on how to interpret the serial number, however, the biggest puzzle is the actual serial and engine number of C3109586 Yes, it is 7 digits (plus the C). Reading the details in the Yesterday's tractor site, she apparently should have only 6 digits. The plate on the toolbox clearly says "Size C". We note that DCTom seems to be the expert on interpreting the serial and engine numbers on the old Case machines, and we would be very appreciative if we could obtain some help on our question from anyone out there who may know the answer. Thanks in anticipation, Tom and Dad (Greg).

Re: Another Aussy Model C, 1936 year model? in reply to Thomas Martin, 08-16-2005 06:17:31
Tom

I own a C3109577 which is only 12 different from yours. My father bought this tractor new at Bingara, just west of Inverell. I have seen another C on the Darling Downs in Queensland that is only 2 different from mine. I imagine that all were part of the one consignment shipped to Australia and distributed through Gamwell Tractor Company in Sydney.

Dad died not long after coming out of the army at the end of WWII. None of my uncles remembered when the tractor was bought so I wrote to Case Public Relations in Racine in about 1970. They replied that the tractor was made in 1927 which was odd because production of the C started in 1929.

Finally I wrote to Dave Erb who told me that in 1936 and 1937 Case used 7 digit numbers for some tractors but followed the 6 digit serial number rule. For our tractors the first and fourth digits give 39, then subtract 3 to give 1936. From 1938 the 7 digit rule is used and the first two digits of the serial number is 42 or greater.

Based on the formula for 7 digits beginning with 41 or less I'd say its a 1936. 1936 was the first year that production exceeded the old 6 digit system and another number was tacked on but still year coded the same. I have encountered other 7 digit tractors that were 36 or 37. The 1938 first model year was when the 7 digit serial numbering system formally began. All 1938 models should have begun with a 42. Seven digit numbers beginning 42 and higher use the later formula.

For more detailed information, see "Full Steam Ahead" pg 328.

Tom, i am no expert on serial # i only have the cards, to my knowledge no 7 digit numbers started with 3, there were 7 digit numbers in last half of 1937 but they all started with 4, your number makes no sense at all, All "C's" were so near the same it is hard to tell difference from year to year,i am sure it dont have a starter but if it did it would be a 1939, sorry i cant be of more help dctom

Logically, 1937 numbers would have to fall into the "4xx0xx" range to work out to 1937 under the old six digit formula. Based on that the first tractor would be 400001, tractor number 1000 would be serialized 410001 and the 10,000 th tractor would be 4100001.

Intrestingly, the later 37 models (numbers 10,000 and later) would read as a 37 using either formula..... Only the production sequence would be off using the 7 normal digit formula.

You lost me on that one. The cards don't read which way?

I have seen the <42/>42 x7 formula several different places, not just in "FSA". "FSA" is just usually my handiest reference point.

I agree that "FSA" has some errors, I've caught a few of them myself where the production numbers just don't add up. Most of what I've found appear to be just typos more than eroneous or supposition.
