Trying to get this heater working. Hooked the wires up and am getting the solenoid to click with the key switch, but doesn't show any voltage on the heater side of the solenoid. I'm no electrical genius, but would think there should be 12 volts going to the heater with the key turned to the left if the solenoid is good. Took the heater out of the manifold and am having trouble determining if it's any good also. Went to the CaseIH dealer and was told they don't offer the manifold heater anymore and it never worked that well to begin with. Anybody have any thoughts as to whether it's worth the effort and $$$ to get this working?
Thanks,jim

The best thing I did to my Case 401 diesel this last winter was to put two brand new 12 volt batteries and matching 00 guage semi style cables on it. The battery cables are the size of a garden hose and aren't really a lot more expensive than the chinsy crap you would pay half as much for. The old beast turns over so fast I think the RPM's actually drop once it starts. This is also the key to getting a 6 volt system to work properly. A good ground and large cables and their is no need to upgrade to 12 volt on the older gas tractors. 6 volt systems need larger cables than a 12 volt system.

Another tip I've heard is to turn it over for 5-10 seconds before you turn the fuel on. This builds up heat in the combustion chamber and prevents the fuel spray from quenching the heat if it doesn't ignite right away.

Up here in Minnesota it gets so cold your blood will freeze if you sit still too long. I started my Case this winter when it was nearly 30 below outside!!! .....Good thing I had it parked in the garage that was over freezing. Ha Ha

You can fix it like they said or find one in a salvage yard. Your dealer sounds like an old IH dealer. I"ve found the heater to work fine but you still need to plug them in when it gets real cold. It is much easier on the engine to use that than ether.

I grew up on a farm in SW Wisconsin. We had two 930 diesels... Not once do I remember the manifold heater ever working on either tractor. Plugged em in when it got cold and a little snort of ether and they would pop right off. Even in the summer if the engine was cold we would still have two use a little shot... Spray a small amount(one short burst) where the manifold heater screws in, that way it won't have to travel that far and crank so much, to save the batteries(when it's very cold). We kept the manifold heater about half loose and with just a quick turn of a crescent wrench it would unscrew easily. BTW: Don't use ether with the heater...It will redecorate the left side of your tractor.

Ours worked great here in central TX, but then were only starting it using them when temp was only as low as high 20s (F). When this tractor was in NW Colorado (-20s) we used a small shot of starting fluid in the air cleaner cap. This worked well with no cracked heads. The key is moderation, "it don't take much"!!

In Minnesota the preheater works good on cool days. My element didn't heat, Case told me not to bother with it. I took it apart, the end of the coil is pressed into the base to serve as a ground, it had come out, I pressed back in and spot welded it with my wirefeed and it's worked fine since! Yes you should have 12vdc at the relay, unhook your element to double check it. I am not afraid to use a little either, remember moderation!!

Well I monkeyed around with it some more and finally got it working. Cleaned up the terminals with a wire wheel, checked the element with the battery charger...ouch that thing gets hot...put it back together and seems to work just fine. The tractor starts a little hard as it is, but popped right off after about 30 seconds with the heater. I already had a new block heater in it for when it gets cold. Would like to stay away from ether if possible although I have used it before. Guess I can take that $35 solenoid back to the auto parts store. Thanks for the replies fellas, jim

I had mine fixed by a GOOD Case mechanic. Up here in SD it gets below 10 deg. quite often. A good system I use is to run the heater 20-30 sec, crank the engine over 4-5 turns to draw the hot air into the cylinders, run the heater again 20-30 sec, and crank it up. mine will start down to 15-20 deg this way without any other assistance. BUT, you must have a GOOD battery. This mechanic also cured my head cracking for good.

Hi:

"cured my head cracking for good"? Sounds like a good topic. Would you like to elaborate?

Pam
