Parking brake on David Brown 995

The parking brake on my 995 no longer latches - I understand from some 2003 posts that there is a pawl inside the housing where the parking brake handle enters.
How does one remove this housing to replace the part?

Gary - if this is like my 990, the parking brake handle passes through a box on which the knob controlling the hitch raise/lower rate is mounted. The works for this function are actually in the valve control box beside the quadrant control. So you can happily remove the knob and box cover without a problem and fix your brake. I think the Brit who designed this had been to the pub for one beer too many before the afternoon design session.....

Before doing so, add copious amounts of WD40. (To the brake lever, not your beer....) I had the same problem and this did the trick.

Do you recall how you got the knob off? Is there a set screw?

Or should I cover it with a good coating of beer?

Ummm... I won't actually be able to look at the damn thing for a week and tell you. If you're asking, sounds like there is no obvious set screw? If it is like the light switch, then there will be a small hole in the side of the said knob, through which you'd expect to find a set screw.

However, surprise! The same guy who designed the handbrake also designed this arrangement. There will be a small spring loaded pin that you have to press down into the knob control shaft with a small screwdriver or punch or whatever will fit through the damn hole. Once the pin is pushed in you can remove the knob.

Hence the very real importance of the WD40 or penetrating oil of some kind because the pin is probably rusted in place. I discovered this the hard way trying to remove the light switch and I ended up destroying the black control knob in the process - I had to buy a new one from Elmer Landman.

These are great reliable tractors but there a few design points that make them much harder to work on than necessary. I think you found one of them! Good luck.

The knob does not come off on the 995 - it is a spring-loaded part of the plate assembly.
I took the plate off, and only saw the mechanism for the hydraulic rate control, and more screws. I decided I might do more harm than good to continue, so either I will let a shop take care of it, or continue to use the loader as my brake.

Yes, they are reliable. The electrical system (mainly lamps) seem to be a little "weak", but the drive train seems solid.
