I'm finally doing a full rebuild on my 401 diesel. I've pulled the heads and there was a major leak on the number 4 cylinder (head gasket). I'm assuming the heads are also full of cracks once I get them to my head shop. I've noticed there are quite a few different casting numbers for the old powercell motors. My question is, is there any advantage to using a different casting number if I have to replace the heads. I'm looking for more power like any other red blooded american. Do the late model 830 heads have larger valves, better ports etc. Could I use a 930 or 1030 head? Any problems with head or manifold studs. I'm a machinist/moldbuilder by trade so I can do some machining if needed to make them work.

Also, it looks like 4.25 is the largest sleeve you can put into the 401 block. You can't put a 4.375 bore sleeve in the 401 can you? Any other advise for the rebuild, more power. How about turning up the pump or different injectors?

Any recommendations on a good rebuild kit?

Thanks in advance,

Mark

My pump was shot so we put an 800 pump on it that is 1800 RPM as opposed to 1550 stock. Also used the 4 1/4 kit from Don Livingston. Still a little disappointed with the power. I thought it would blow away a DC but it doesn't.
