54 SC problems

Hi, about a year ago I bought a 54 sc that was stuck. Got it unstuck, had the head worked on, rebuilt carb, and put on a fairbanks morse fm-j mag. The engine will run only if I can get it spinning over fast enough. It seams it takes way too much spinning over to get it running. When it does run, it runs fair, not great or anything. Also, it seems like after trying to start it fuel drains back down the intake and overflows the float bowl, then running out the air intake. My float is good and is set at the right height, mag is timed to the flywheel mark. I have also checked the intake for cracks, and it is sealed good to the head. If I take a piece of cardboard and let it suck up against the carb air intake sometimes I can get it running, but not usually. It does have very good suction doing this, though. Anybody have an idea what i am doing wrong? Ive never had this much trouble getting an engine to run before, pulling what little hair I have left out. Is there any way to check valve timing gear, mag drive and crank marks without removing front cover? Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks, John. (sorry for the long post)

Thanks for all the responses and ideas. If I have time this weekend I will double and triple check the ignition, and go from there. I also agree that the fuel thing could be a symptom rather than the whole problem. I will post again whenever I remedy the problem. If you think of any other ideas, let me know. There is a wealth of knowledge on this board, and I really enjoy it. Thanks again, John.

The only way that you can have that much gas running is if the Float Valve is not stopping it. Are you sure the Spark Plug wires are Correct? 1-3-4-2. In that order to the plugs. When you put Rings in, did you check the End Gaps? If you didn't pull the Timing Gears, the Valve Timing should be OK. Fouled Plugs can be a Son of a Gun. Once fouled they don't work very well. I take a torch to them to restore them. I prefer Autolites.

I kind of agree with John that it could be an ignition issue. The float bowl on an SC is not very big and they are easy to flood, so the gas overflow might be a symptom other than the cause. If it is the carb make sure the pin for the float is not causing it to bind as I had this issue once on my '44 SC. Also, I am not sure how well an SC will run without the air cleaner (you stated gas was leaking out of air intake - at carb I presume) on it given the length of the intake stack and upflow through the manifold. It might be that you are not creating enough vacuum to suck the gas vapor to the intake valves - the long manifold intake can be troublesome, especially in cold weather when they tend to freeze up. Not trying to be a "know it all" just sharing experiences - hope it helps.

Looking at the SC service manual under service suggestions - engine hard to start. The last four items on the list are valves not seating properly, valve tappets improperly adjusted, intake manifold leaking, improper timing. Proper closed valve clearance is .010 with the engine cold. The service manual cautions that faulty valves and/or adjustment is usually the cause of low compression. Todd Hamilton

You said you got it "unstuck", but you didn't say how. The thing is that if you didn't pull the pistons and free up the rings you could have poor compression. Run a compression check. That could be your problem.

Thanks for the reply, Camboted. When i unstuck it, I got it broke loose by penetrating oil, and rocking the rear wheels over a period of several days. I then removed the head and sent it to the machine shop for valve work, honed the sleeves, and put on a new set of rings. I am really stumped on this, especially the part about the fuel seeming to come back down the intake manifold after cranking the engine. It seems like the valve timing is incorrect, but I checked the valves, and if I did it right the valves are in time. Hope someone has the answer. Thanks, John. p.s. Camboted- I admire the work you are doing on the other side of the world.

I really admire Ted's work too - I want one of those Hudson Power Steering units for my SC!:^)
