Question about filling a propane tractor

I just bought a DC on propane. How do you guys fill your tractors?

The local propane company is not thrilled about coming out for 25 gallons, and I"m not thrilled about loading the tractor up and hualing it to them either.

I would like to keep it on propane, because it looks so different at the tractor pulls and shows.

Is there a way to fill it from a home propane tank (large 250 gallon tank)? I was told it would only get about half full doing that.

Any advice would be a big help.

I've got a 1955 John Deere 50LP, it's a cinch to fill up from your 250 gallon tank if you have a dip tube in the tank where you can hook up a hose. The people who fill up your tank can help you with a hose and a valve on both ends.

You should have a small vent screw on the top of your tractor's tank. Open it when you start filling the tank, it will start hissing and letting out propane gas. Don't unscrew it all the way, just enough for the gas to start spewing out the hole in the side. BE SURE there are no sparks or flames in the area, and you'll probably attract flies and bees. When it gets 80% full it will start letting out white fog, that's the liquid propane.

When you hook up the hose from your tank to the tractor, crack the valve open a little to clear the air out of the hose so you won't put air into the tank.

If it's hot, the pressure in the tank might be higher than your big tank, just let that valve in the top keep hissing and eventually the pressure will equalize and it will start filling. You'll be able to feel it in the hose. If you don't want to wait for that little bitty screw hole to vent enough, your propane company can supply you with a fitting you can screw on to the vapor port on the tank to let it vent faster.

Before you do ANY of this, be sure you wear some heavy leather gloves. The propane if VERY cold and will freeze your fingers in just a couple of seconds. Your skin will stick to those connectors even if the freezing vapor doesn't give you frostbite. Back when I was a kid and thought I was immortal, we used to freeze coke cans in about 10 seconds with the propane hose!

Take your time, you'll get the hang of it. If you use propane very much, you'll really like how clean it burns and also you'll notice that the tractor lasts forever because the propane doesn't wash the oil off the cylinder walls.

I'm sure I've forgotten something, but just be careful and you'll figure it out. We started using propane when I was 12, if a 12 yr old punk kid can do it, I'm sure you can too. Just don't do the crazy things we used to do like freezing cokes!

Out of curiousity, what did you pay for it if you don't mind? We have a 730LP that we had up for sale and people wanted us to basically just give it away since it was propane.

I paid just a little over $900.00 for it. I have not seen it in person yet but the pictures look pretty good, and he said it runs good. I was surprised to get it that cheap since it had the propane head on it.

I kind of like propane tractors myself, I have always wanted one. Couldn't find one close enough and for the right price until now.

Ok, I just knew from the phone number it was same place near here in Littlefield TX. They are fair to deal with but I didn't realize they were that big or connected like that either.

As long as we are on this subject. I had the tank filled on my Case D. I went to turn the valves on and they seemed to be leaking bad. Do not know when the last time it was filled or used. Question is there a sealing that needs replacing or is there a way to lubricate it???. Also wondering if there is a way to take the valves apart with out draining them..

Yep have to drain it. You local LP dealer should be able to get kits for your valves or new valves.

You don't have to drain the tank. I watched the propane dealer change mine out with 60% still in tank. There is a check ball that will seat if you open the valve very quickly. This check ball will seat if there is a sudden leak somewhere down the line. He then simply unscrewed the valve and put in the new ones. The whole job took the guy five minutes and cost me like $23.00.

LP dealer told me that was a excess flow control disc. After taking the old valves out there was just a thin disc on back side. Yes, it will shut when you open the valve fast or there is a leak. On my valves it wouldn't shut off and had to drain the tank. That's why they say to open the valves slowly so this disc doesn't shut. Some may have a check ball? They just told me it wasn't a safe practice to change it that way because the disc could fail and mine were leaking bad too.

I had the same problem I had to empty the tank and replace the valves. You can try tighting the jam nut just under the handle but the packing is probly gone or dried up becarfull mine started leaking worse when I tried tighting it must been all dried out inside. Your best bet is to empty the tank and put new valves in the tank.

We used to have a Minneapolis Moline UB on propane when I was a kid.

We used to fill it with one hose that was good for liquid propane from the same tank that heated the house.

We would hook up the liquid hose and then open the valves on both ends and then we would vent off the vapor from the tractor tank and this would cause a lower pressure in that tank and as a result the liquid would move from the supply tank to the tractor. It would gush liquid propane when it was full.

In later years we used a similiar setup on the liquid but instead of bleeding vapor off into the atmosphere we would instead pump it back into the supply tank through another hose using a special hand pump. This would cause the lower pressure in the tractor and consequently move the liquid across.

Make sure you bleed the fittings before you unhook any hoses.

You can fill it off a 250 gallon tank. We been filling some JDs with 33 gallon tank like that for years. Need a wet line in tank and a liquid filler hose and according to regulations a vapor return line. Find another propane dealer that knows what you need.

Thanks guys. Don't worry about getting off topic, you guys just answered some more questions I had but didn't ask. I knew there was a way to fill the tractor from a larger house tank.

I found some guys not to far from me that have a bunch of propane tractors, and just so happens they own a very large propane company. So I'm going to try and get in touch with them.

I should pick up the tractor next month so I more than likely you will see more propane questions from me.

Thanks,
Travis
