Hello, I had written a while ago about a carb that ran rich. We found our float was off by 1/4". However, we still are not running correctly. And our oil has a distinctly gasoline smell to it. And when we pull the plug wires off of either #1 or #4 cylinders, it makes no difference as to how the tractor runs. Take them off of #2 and #3, she runs rough. We have put a rebuilt mag on there, but my friend helping was wondering if, when you turn the magneto by hand, that spring should reset every revolution, or should it turn freely at times also. In other words, should there be a snap of the spring for every rotation? If not, could this be causing the built up fuel and the lack of a noticeable difference with #1 and #4?

Any help would again be greatly appreciated.

Thanks. Tammie

This really made me feel stupid but it took me about 1/2 day to figure it out when i had a similar problem. Do you realize that the mag runs counter revolutioary to the rotation of the dive? In other words, you think youve got it hooked up 1-3-4-2 when really you have 1-2-4-3. One and four will fire the other two pum fuel. LOL!

YEs, I found that out the hard way once too. Nice loud bang when it finally hit all fuel. I think we have that part of it correct. Someone suggested earlier about burnt vavles. Would a compression test have caught that? We have good, very equal compression at around 135-140 per cylinder (I think that was the numer). At any rate, all four were consistent.

We will keep trying. I thank you all for your help. As far as the 180 degrees out of time, wouldn't that basically mean we have it on upside down or soemthing like that? It seems to work okay with the mag tilted away from the engine, not quite up and down, but more out and away. We have not had time to play with it anymore. It has just been too hot.

I will keep you posted. C Hess-I may yet take you up on your offer of a phone call, if it's still open.

Thanks. Tammie

Make sure you are not 180 degrees out of time.

Agree with Don an will add you can check wires by removing i at time an holding close to engine-about 1\4 in you should have blue spark. Use insulated tool to hold wire. Hurts if you get shocked!!!!

Here's a couple of things to check: How are your spark plug wires? If they are the originals they are probably bad. Try substituting good wires on those cylinders that are not working right. Another possibility is broken valve springs on those two cylinders or even very badly burnt valves.
