Now what?

I'm baffled... All I did was spray the engine with degreaser, and hose it off. Now it won't start if it's life depended on it. That was yesterday, and after it wouldn't start I changed the plugs to brand new ones, put on brand new plug wires, brand new distributor cap. Made sure the inside of the cap was dry, points are dry. I had it running yesterday after all this, and now today, back to no start? It can't be wet, it's been 80 plus degrees here, and no rain. I must have hit something or done something when I was washing the engine, but what? Totally baffled... I sprayed a little gas in the cylinders and put the plugs back in, no fire at all.

More baffling... When cranking it to try to start it, the battery cable going to the starter is so hot that it is melting the shielding near the terminal on the starter. The terminal on the starter is so hot it is smoking???

You may have gotten some water in the starter, that plus brush dust, rust, and dirt in there may be grounding the starter. Grounded starter = least resistance path and voltage may be too low for ignition.

Take the band off the starter end (if it has one), check commutator, brush area.

Thanks Joe, I took off the band, very oily, very dirty, looks original, but no water that I could see. BTW, while on the topic of starters, how does it come off? I cannot see any bolts that hold it on, just one large bolt on top of the casting that the starter goes into. This is a '49 SC.

Any dampness in the starter can ground the brush dust (carbon) and continue to gnd after it dries. You might want to try pull starting the tractor for a check.

Sorry, I don't have much personal experience with SC. I think the flywheel/clutch area has engine oil in it. Best wait until someone who knows what they are talking about chimes in here.

That large bolt on top of the starter should have a lock nut on it. Loosen the lock nut and then remove the bolt. Then pull the starter straight forward about 3" and it will be in your hands. Glenn F.

Glenn,

Another question about starter removal on the SC. When the starter is pulled, will I dump oil from the crank case, or is the starter above the oil level?

Dan

Thanks Glenn, that's kinda what I figured. As for the other problem, thus far I have no spark. I'm thinking I may have gotten water down into the coil.
