I have a Case 530 or possibly a 430 diesel without a serial number. I've been looking at buying a parts manual for it but they come in pre and post sn 8262800 versions. Anyone know how to tell pre and post 8262800 530/430's from each other?

The newer ones have hydrostatic steering with two cylinders in the front axle (under the oil pan). The old ones can have a 12 speed trans. The old ones have the Eagle Hitch (solid arms) and the mewer ones have draft-o-matic 3 pt. But thoes can be a 1964. The 430's have the engine breather that comes out of the top of the hood. The 530's have the battery directly in front od the gearshift levers. The 430 has it under the hood with a lid you open up.

Tom, thanks. I clearly have manual steering with the linkage in front of the axle and a 12 speed which suggests older. But I have three point draft-o-matic which suggests newer. I have the air breather in front of the radiator which suggests 530 but the battery is under the hood which suggests 430 but the rear tires and wheels are 19.5x28 that came on a 530 Ag utility tractor. Also, measuring the fuel tank suggests closer to 22 gal. than 13 which also suggests 530 and the fuel injection pump number ends with 2AAJ which does not match the 430 4AJ or 530 3AJ or 630 1AJ. The more information I get the more confused I become. Jim

The grill screens on the 530 are 18 1/8" tall, the 430's are shorter. In the center of your hood (within a foot behind of where your muffler comes out of the hood ) would be where the enging breather would come out the top of the hood. That would make it a 430. This is different than the air cleaner that is in front of the radiator. The draft o matic started in 1964, but the 1964's still had a hand clutch on the left side of the clutch housing. I bet you have a 1964 430.

It is dark and I can't find a working flashlight so I can't go out a measure the grill. I do have the hand clutch on the left side and the air intake is in front of the radiator not above the hood. Could this be a diesel versus gas difference rather than a 430/530 difference? The way my luck is going I probably have a 530 indicated by the air intake and a 430 by the grill height. I will know in the morning. However knowing '64 because of the hand clutch and Draft-O-Matic is quite helpful. That should put the serial number between 8229001 and 8253501. So if I get a 430/530 pre 8262800 parts book I should find it useful. Thanks
I'll post the grill measurement in the morning.

Grill height is 15 inches! I'm concluding that Tom is right that it is a '64 430. I went ahead and took the hood off and measured the fuel tank with the tape measure and 13 gallons does seem about right. I also took a magnifying glass out to read the stamps on the injector pump. It ends in 24AJ which could well be a replacement part number. Again, thanks for all the help. Once I learn more, I'll try to repay the list for all the help. Jim

I have 3 manuals, early, middle & late model. I had to have all 3 to match parts and determine a approx. serial number for parts ordering or matching used parts?
Best wishes, Dennis.....
