The DC is put together. Problem is, the foot clutch won't disengage. It makes no difference whether the foot peddle is in or out. As I watch the action through the side opening, everything appears to be working properly. There is no play in the linkage. What do I do? Thanks, Glenn F.

I have a '54 SC with the foot clutch and when I bought it the previous owner said it would not disengage. I have the I&T shop manual with the picture of the 400 Case on the front cover. There is a special section regarding adjustment of the pressure plate release fingers and it gives measurements as to what the adjustments should be. You will probably have to split your tractor to make sure the finger adjustment is right. My clutch worked fine the first time I put it in gear.

Foot clutch adjustment information is hard to find for the DC. Can you get a I&T shop service manual?? It gives about three paragraphs of adjustment suggestions. Your clutch pedal should not have less than 5/16 inches of free movement. If you disconnect the pedal rod yoke from the clutch lever you should have more than 3/8 inch of movement at the yoke pin hole or your plate is shot, but that would probably make it slip not lock in gear. My thinking is the problem is in the three clutch levers or fingers that disengage the pressure plate.

First, I would check to see if all three fingers on the prressure plate release are engaging the through-out bearing uniformly. If one is broken, or the pivot pin on one is broken, or bent it could be the problem. (Unfortuneately, not all foot clutch plates are the same. Case added heavier or stronger springs on the later plates) I believe there is an adjustment nut on each finger, at least on some of the plates. Did you replace the clutch disc? If not, it could be stuck to the flywheel, as when sitting for a long period it is permanately engaged. There is no internal adjustment like on the hand clutch. Wish I could be more help. You might try to contact Don Rudolph, he's a "foot clutch guy".

Thanks guys for your responses. The three fingers on the pressure plate were indeed WAY out of adjustment. I don't see how it worked on the other tractor. Each of them were drfferent but all were too far away. I was able to adjust them throuth the side hole, without splitting the tractor. Now, if I could just get Frankenstein to run! I plan on working on it again this afternoon, but this thing has me stumped. Gettin' the SC timed was a breeze compared to this thing. I think a good thunderstorm would do it! Glenn F.
