How do you know if a 300 tractor has a dual-plate clutch instead of a single plate clutch (other than splitting it)?

Current tractor is serial no. EXP-14, triple range, gas engine (was LP at one time) separate hand clutch and foot clutch.

Thanks you guys!

At first glance you may have a considerably rare tractor are you sure that this is not a VAC-14, could you post a picture of the tractor and possibly do you have any history on it, EXP as I have found is a designation for Experimental Could it be you have a pre-300 series tractor if so you should have direction from many individuals here that can provide experience as how to preserve the condition of the tractor, please email [email protected] with the serial number too see if he can provide you with the build card data for the tractor and let us know what you find out

I would be willing to trade this 'rare' tractor for any decent running utility-style case, such as 430,530,311,411,630 etc. Preferably diesel, and power steering. Maybe even a non-running 730 or 830 Comfort King. (within 150 miles of zip 53004)

Sorry, I remembered it wrong. Just checked again. Plate reads "Model : EXP , Ser No: 17 "

Yeah, Yeah, yeah. I really don't care much about the rare status. I'm not planning to paint it green and double the price or anything. I just want it to get back to work. It is a 300. I have VAC's and I know the difference. Ever heard of a VAC with a triple range?
I just want to know about the clutch distinction. My parts manual says there could be two different types. What was the purpose of the double plate clutch in some 300's? Was that in place of the hand clutch for independent PTO, or was it for higher torque? I need to know which one so I can order parts.

In your parts manual compare the bracket & hub asm part of the pressure plates. The pressure plate for the single plate clutch has 6 equally spaced bolts to the flywheel. The double plate clutch pressure plate also has 6 bolts but they are paired with a space in between the pairs.

The flywheels are also different. The double plate clutch flywheel periphery surface (the surface the timing mark is on) is notched for the clutch plates inner ring. This surface on the single plate clutch does not have the notches.

You can view all of the above through the timing hole.

The configuration of the engine clutch has nothing to do with the constant running pto. You need a separate clutch for that function.

No timing hole anywhere. Solid cast iron except where the wide front pivot plate bolts on the front of the bellhousing, and the little hole for the clutch rod to go through. Guess I'll just have to split it before ordering parts.

Right side on the bell housing just below and aft of the starter. Round 1-1/2" dia. Metal cap like a knockout cover used on a electrical box, pry out. Probably painted over, hard to spot sometimes.

I have no idea WHAT you have other than to help with answers to your questions. To receive a fair value you could list it here in the auction pages with a reserve, However first find out what you have it could be that someone has adapted parts over the years and you have a mixed tractor, if it appears that I am way off on that point and everything looks orginal it is important that it is kept as close to its orginal "shipped" condition. it is an important part of J.I.Case history on tractor devolpment even if it holds no value to you personally, the Email to Richard is worth his return reply to you even if you do not want to buy the build card for $7.00, then everyone can way in once we know what you have.

After a little investigation and reading I found on pages 220-224 (Full Steam Ahead)by David Erb and Eldon Brumbaugh, the whole story of 50 VAC-14's that were modified to compete with oliver and ferguson at this time regarding their draft sensing 3-point system, maybe at 17 they were playing around with transmission speeds and independant PTO
