I still have a rattling noise / vibration coming from my 37 Case L transmission. I replaced the clutch shaft pinion bearing and pilot bearing. Both were rough but not totally out. The nose is only when the clutch is engaged. I listened to the first and second reduction shaft bearings and all sound good. There is no play in the shafts. Everything turns free and smooth. The sound almost sounds like a dry sound. Like something is not getting lubrication. The transmission fluid is full with 85-90 wt. Is there such thing as a worn gear vibrating on a shaft? The clutch is working fine. I am totally baffled on this.

Question: Does this noise only appear when the tractor is in motion, or does it crop up if the tractor is in neutral and you engage the clutch just to start the belt pulley?

I believe both. While in gear and moving, I can feel the vibration. When in neutral with the belt pulley fully engaged (snapped), it vibrates and makes the noise. If I run the pully without snapping the clutch, it runs smooth without the vibration. The vibration occurs only when the clutch is engaged and snapped.

I played some more and the noise comes after the clutch is snapped and engaged. If I engage the clutch (without snapping it), the transmission runs quiet.

The only thing I can think of would be a cracked finger on the clutch engagement mechanism, but I'm supposing you would have looked it over when you had it out. I have seen them break at the bottom of the pivot pin hole, but I don't remember all the symptoms. the rattle could just be backlash in the bevel gears. It would do it idling with the pulley engaged, not while working. Just a couple of guesses.

Thanks for the reply.

I am totally baffled on this one. I examined the clutch and even cleaned it. The fingers are all good. I even pulled the pins and cleaned the fingers. The oil holes in the pinion shaft are clean so nothing is starving for oil. The hole in the sliding cone bushing is open. I just don't know why it does this when the clutch is fully snapped. I may have to split it again and have somebody else look at it.

Here's another idea. Possibly the crankshaft has too much endplay and is pushing back on the clutch shaft. This would explain why it goes away when you're holding the clutch engaged. The clutch pressure would hold the crank foreward. Once snapped it would be free. Easy fixes? there isn't one.
